Mic Attenuation

Years ago, I had an old Shure (ball type) microphone with a volume control on its side. It was useful on stage, particularly if you were a solo act.

It led me to think. Is there a small, perhaps XLR plug size, in-line device that would provide "variable" attenuation to dynamic and self powered condenser mics? I have mic to line level attenuators, but that's too much.

My problem is that when the output of my on-camera shotgun is too high, I lose "wiggle" room in adjusting the audio input on the camera. This is only a problem when shooting in high volume areas, such as near live bands. I have outboard Beachtek mixers, but they're too bulky. An extra inch or two of attenuator plugged in the back of the shotgun would be just right!

Anyone know of such a device?

A fixed -10dB inline XLR attenuator is quite inexpensive, and usually does the trick for balanced mics.

As far as a variable attenuator with DC passthrough for unbalanced condenser mics, perhaps they exist, but I'm not familiar enough to offer a suggestion.

I own one of these:

It has a selectable 10 or 20 dB pad, would this help?
