I would have expected the left only. Are you sure you have the headphones on the right way around?

But yes, this is to be expected. The microphone jack on the camera is a stereo jack intended for a stereo mic which will have a three-conductor plug similar to your headphones. The mic you bought is mono and only has a two-conductor plug (look at them and compare). I wouldn't worry about it too much. Since it's a mono mic anyway, having it record on only one channel will still sound the same. When you import the video into Vegas, right-mouse-click on the audio track, choose channels / right channel only (or, if my suspicion is correct, left channel only). This will spread the one channel you've recorded across both.

You can pick up an adapter at Radio Shack, but be careful. Sometimes they don't always line up properly with the camera jack's conductors. If you try one, get a right angle adapter instead of a straight one. They are not as vulnerable.

Nope. Not quite. That wouldn't change what is happening at all. You need a 3.5mm stereo plug to 3.5mm mono socket.
