Mini DV to Vegas

Derm wrote on 5/21/2009, 3:00 AM
Hi,
I'm trying to transfer some old mini dv tapes from an old Sony camcorder to Vegas pro 9 via the firewire I/O, but it doesn't work, the camera is not recognised. I have also tried with PPro and no success. I have an ADVC converter and could go the analog conversion route but am hoping to avoid the quality loss. Any boy have any idea about what i might be doing wrong?.
Thanks
Derm

Not an expert on this by any means but have you tried checking your connections and cables? Sometimes a new firewire cable does the trick.

Have you been using an HDV camcorder to this point?
Maybe you set this as a default and need to tell it to use the other version of VidCap.

Hi,
The cables are fine, they work in fine with the ADVC converter.
Have never used a HDV camcorder.
Thanks for the input.

I'm running 64bit Vista on a Phenom quad core, and have had the same problem with the Firewire ports. I either had to reboot the system or disable then enable the port driver using the device manager to get the Firewire port working again.

1. Right click the "My Computer" icon.
2. Click "Manage"
3. Click "Device Manager" in the left column
4. Click the "+" next to "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers"
5. Right click the IEEE device listed (mine is "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller")
6. Click "Disable"
7. Click "Yes" at the next prompt
8. Repeat step 5
9. Click "enable"

Your Firewire port might be working again...

Do you have ANY other f/w device connected to ANYthing on your PC? Have you done this type of capture to this PC before? What is your AV><DV convertor? Is it in the workflow - anywhwere? I recently had my CANOPUS S-Video out got to my CRT extrnal monitor. I just did a VidCap to check what you are saying, and it works. However and I just got an framerate Preview issue 'cos I have my f/w still connected. Switched off the device and I now have proper framerate. Why? 'cos I have the temerity to use the S-Video & the F/W ports from the CANOPUS. The next thing I may experimenbt wioth is go via my MoBo which DIOES have a f/w too!

Anyways, do look at the way your convertor may or may niot be interrupting your signal. Been there . . done that . . very boring indeed . ..

To echo Grazies questions - have you ever done anything on this firewire port before? If not, is it a VIA firewire port/card? If it is, get a new (non VIA) firewire card.

Hi,
I have an RME Fireface plugged into the same card as the port that I am attempting to use, it has 3 ports. No I have never captured DV with this firewire port directly, only through the Canopus ADVC, S-Video from camera to ADVD and firewire from ADVC to PC.
I am hoping to get better quakity by bypassing the conversion stage.
Thanks for the input .
P.S. the Fireface is the audio card I'm using for Vegas 9. Not sure what the brand of fw card is. I have another on a second PC, I'll try that one also with nothing else plugged in to it.

That could very well be the problem.
I use an M-Audio 410 and it HAS to be on it's own firewire card to work.

I assume you're saying that VIA OHCI Compliant cards aren't a good idea, or don't work at all? Could you recommend a specific non-VIA card?

Thanks.

I don't know the reason for that advice, VIA 1394 cards work without a hitch for me. Even with a HD plugged into the same card.
