Mini dvd back up's

Hi, I am pretty new to this game and have purchased a DVD camcorder and am about to tackle the VMS software to put 3 or 4 disks on 1dvd and perhaps do a bit of editing. In the meantime I need to clear my current mini dvd's for further use. I intend to import my dvd media to a seperate hard drive where it appears to change the format a VTS 1(01) file and VTS 1(01)mpg.sfk for each event. I assume one video file and one audio file. Is this an adequate way to store the files for the future use or should I copy and paste across to store the files in their original format. I obviously want to keep my options open for the future and would not like to think if I only have the imported version, they can only be used with Vegas? Also is it possible to import from this hard drive to a new project at a later date? Sorry if the question is too basic for this forum.

Hate to tell you, but probably the best thing you could do for yourself is to return the DVD camcorder and buy a MiniDV model instead. Doing anything with the discs from a DVD camcorder other than watching them unedited is a royal pain.

The VTS file contains both audio and video. The .sfk version contains only a picture of the audio waveform that you see on the timeline, not the audio itself.

If you want to keep future options open, using MiniDV will make things much easier for you.
