missing audio to my video files

newb here.. sorry peeps...
i used vegas 6 about 5 years ago and have never used vegas since.. and i've completely forgotton how to get the audio from my video file to show within the arrangement/events page of vegas movie studio v9... i can import the video to a video track without any problem.. but the track itself doesn't seem to like the idea of having audio there with it... Seperate audio, like music, is fine too.. its just the audio that should be with the video i cant get...

any ideas??

Cheers,

nab.

Sorry, nab. It's not clear what you're asking.

The Timeline includes separate audio and video tracks. You can't put audio on a video track or vice versa. However, the two should be linked for any media file that includes both audio and video so that, when you add the video to your timeline, the accompanying audio is added to an audio track simultaneously.

Is that not happening on your system?

Is this the same video that you used to import .. or is this a "new" type of video?

If so .. where did it come from and what can you tell us about the type of video file it is.

well firstly, thanks for the replies, i wasn't sure how frequently these forums were actually used, so that's good to know there's someoe out there!!

some details then;

the files that come straight from my camcorder are in .AVI format...
when i play these files on my computer (through for example, windows media player) the video has sound, just like you'd expect (unless you chose the the cameras settings to dootherwise).

However, when i import these files into Vegas Movie Studio v9 the audio is not there... I'm aware it should be 'grouped' with the video but on seperate tracks, but its just not there full-stop.

I since tried converting these files to .WMV format and i could then bring a 'skeleton' of the file loaded within Vegas, however THEN it was the video that was missing (Media Offline) and the audio that WAS there...

i should point out as well, i know Vegas will say the media is 'offline' if i had deleted or moved the file about, but i havn't done either of those things...

thanks for your time peeps,

nab.

"the files that come straight from my camcorder are in .AVI format..."

You haven't provided the name and model of your camcorder or the codecs in your AVI files. There are as many flavors of AVI as there are jelly beans in a five gallon jar. So none of the essential information is here to work from.

If you are not sure of your file information, download MediaInfo from Sourceforge and post the details here.

In the meantime, here is a basic tutorial you should find interesting if you read it thoroughly:

And here's a relevant thread I started just yesterday that I'm still working on with some input from "musicvid":

ok musicvid thanks for the suggestions, i'll give that a try tomorrow and come back with some more info for you...

i cant help but be a little disappointed though.. the fact that i have to do ANY of what you just said sickens me to think i send ANY money on this product at all... i downloaded a piece of free video editing software (that i grant you is FAR less advanced to vegas movie studio) but at the very least it plays any file i've thrown at it so far..

the very least i expected from purchasing some video software was being able to load my videos in the program... i didnt realise i was gonna have to become a professor of file formats to work it...

ok, rant over, i'll crack on tomorrow...

cheers

nab:

If you don't mind, please let me know what that "free video editing software" is that accepts your files.

I too am quite disappointed that my Vegas Movie Studio won't handle the AVI files from my Toshiba camera (no audio). The extra steps I'm taking to convert the files into an AVI that VMS will accept are just not worth the extra time or space.

Thank you...

i can certainly tell u JimPeoria, but it really is the most basic of editing facilities.. adding text, adding audio, fading, cross fading, etc... so it depends what u want out of it... if u just want to edit family films, it'll most likely do you fine... if you want to edit music videos or short films etc you may want to find something more advanced! its called 'VideoPad Video Editior' i think i got it from download.com... hope this helps...
