missing option to import mp3s

First off, I have a 64 bit system windows 7, with i7, 6 gigs of ram, etc. So I own the full version of pro 10 and upgraded (offered by Sony) to pro 11. I've downloaded the recent update to the 64 bit build 425.

Once in vegas pro 11, I tried the new features and everything worked great except... no option to open, import, or render mp3. I looked up at past forums on google, on this forums, nothing. Everyone said to convert mp3s to wave files. Which is fine. My expectation of this new program is to work straight out the box. So I tried what many have already done in past versions of vegas pro. Uninstall and reinstall. I did it for both versions and it was the same.

After several hours of troubleshooting, I've downloaded the trial of vegas pro 11 (this is file before the update of build 425 64bit) and opened it up. Guess what.... It worked! So I've updated the software to its current version and everything worked out just fine.

I can't say that this will work for you, but, it did for me. Just passing it onto those who has a problem similar to mines. Hope this helps!

So that particular 'update' does not contain the MP3 codec perhaps ? Odd ...

PS Curious as to why "Everyone said to convert mp3s to wave files".

I don't know if its because of the current version of the update, but, it was for me in my case. For those who have the same problem that I was experiencing, try it out. It can't hurt.

Yes, alot of forums I've read all said the same thing. To convert those mp3s to waves or AAC files.

In what context and for what purpose ? 'A lot' of rubbish is claimed in a lot of forums....

I guess I would convert to .WAV if I planned to do any editing. Wouldn't want multiple saves to the same MP3 file.

>> Yes, In what context and for what purpose ? I would only agree.. if the original MP3 or other lossy format file would be edited and re-encoded.
By merely re-saving the file to non-compressed format, it certainly won't make it sound any better... the same goes for upping the sample rate and/or bit depth. For instance, a 22.5k/8bit file up-converted to 44.1k/16, would still have the original file's quality, or lack thereof.
In our case however, Vegas is non-destructive.. so there's no point.

The VegasPro11 Technical Specification web page http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/techspec definitely says VP11 Opens and Saves MP3 files amongst a whole raft of supported formats.

How are you trying to import the MP3? you should be able to just drag them from the Explorer view directly to timeline.

Certainly if edited resaving to an MP3 is bad, with cumuative data-reductions.

But as you say, simply converting to a WAV is exactly the same 'quality' as the original mp3.

In fact simply having the MP3 on the timeline, the event is already effectively converted to a WAV, I believe it's a 'proxy' file, and not directly decoding from MP3 on playback/preview.

Before the update, I wish it was that simple to drag and drop onto the timeline but, it acted as if it wasn't even there. Which is why I could open, import, nor render mp3s. Not even in my explorer tab of vegas pro showed mp3s... Only videos and pics. Even being in the folder of my music files didn't show up, only the album cover art. I typed in *.mp3 for file name and it popped up right after... Double clicking on the file and it says that an error has occurred when opening the file but, no error codes no was there an explanation. Simply nothing...

Now, after doing a previous update and current update. It sees my mp3 files where its at. So if you find a better solution, do post them here as it would help others. I'm only posting what worked for me. :)
