Missing WMV choices

jetdv wrote on 1/29/2003, 10:41 AM
Just set up a new computer with Vegas 3. Tried capture, render, and PTT and all seems to work fine. Then I decided to render to WMV for internet usage. I have NO CHOICES under WMV. What, specifically, do I need to install to get the WMV choices. Media Player IS installed and plays the DV-AVI files just fine. What additionally needs to be installed to get the additional choices?

You can go to www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx and download the Media 8 and Media 9 codec installation packages. I think Media 8 codecs show up as wmv8 and Media 9 codecs show up as wmv8.1 in Vegas.

Thanks.

Just downloaded both files and will get them installed.

Another question: Any preference for Quicktime 5.02 over 6.???

I have QT5 on my other computers but was wondering if it may now be time to go to QT6.

FWIW, the MS encoder for winmedia 9 can be slow, but it can do a pretty nice job when rendering dual pass vbr, even if you use something like their mpeg4 or wm7 formats. The only caution I'd add there, is that if you go to an avi file rather then some sort of frameserving, the new encoder does not like VV3 produced blank header or ending clips -- think it reads them as having no audio, or less then full length audio.

QT6 is supposed to have a slightly nicer sorenson routine, but the big news was their mpeg4 codec. You can access it in VV3, but not the matching mpeg audio if I remember correctly.

For low bitrate (900K & less), I'm *REALLY* impressed with VV4 Beta's RealMedia 9 output.

OK, I just installed both the wm8 and wm9 codecs from the download. Then I started Vegas 3c again and it still sees nothing under wmv. All of the dropdown boxes are literally empty. What else do I need to do to get wmv to show up? OS is WinXP Pro.

did you reboot your computer?

Yes I did reboot. The drop down boxes are still empty for WMV.

Once I had a problem where Vegas would not allow me to change field order. I finally uninstalled and reinstalled, making sure ALL other programs were not running (virus checker, uninstaller, etc.). Worked like a charm. As a last resort you might consider it.

This morning I uninstalled Vegas and then reinstalled Vegas. I did NOT delete any additional subdirectories or registry entries. The codecs still have not appeared.

Wow... I feel for you. I am using win2000 so not sure what the following things are called in XP. Go to the device manager and click the Sound, video and game controllers icon. Click the Video Codecs icon to list the installed codecs. Under properties you will find the installed codecs. The wmv codecs are listed as Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec.

This page may explain it.

If they check out as installed, download a program called regcleaner. It's free and good. Uninstall Vegas and then run regcleaner. Assuming you have no other Sonic Foundry products, select every Sonic Foundry item listed in the registry and delete it. Then reinstall. If this doesn't work, you need someone with better than my minimal knowledge.

Did you install SP1 by any chance? I know there was a problem rendering to wmv, but the problem was it got an error message not that the codecs were missing. Like boomanbb said to do, check to see if there are codecs installed for Windows. Vegas uses these.

Otherwise, check this SF knowledgebase article.

Actually, the laptop came with SP1 already installed. Running the program listed at that link allowed the wm8 names to appear. I still haven't seen the wm9 (wm8.1) names but thought I might re-run the wm9 codec setup. As you said, I thought this file simply fixed problems with rendering. It made the choices visible on my system.

I've had this problem with my WinXPSp1 machine. I attempted to correct it with the suggest download in the knowledge base. It didn't do any good.

I finally decided to format the drive and reinstall XP from scratch. Of course, my WMV choices returned. However, I haven't installed SP1, WM9, or any other critical updates....yet.

Glad that worked for you. Wasn't sure if it would or not, Mikee's didn't. Let us know if the WP9 codec works.

I wonder if your laptop mfg. has a problem with their XP OPK (OEM Preinstallation Kit)?
