Mix of non-compliant video with compliant video

Perhaps I'm over-thinking this and it's obvious............

I'm building a simple single layer DVD that contains one MPEG2/AC3 file. Both were rendered as separate streams from Vegas Pro. Both are compliant and shouldn't be recompressed.

However when, I build a menu, the menu shows up as non-complaint and subject to recompression. That's fine with me.

Here's my question: If you have a non-compliant menu and compliant streams for video and audio, will DVD Architect recompress the whole thing (menu/video/audio) ?

What's even more confusing is that if my video stream is 6,000 kb/s, then why in the optimize window is the default bitrate silder (showing 8,000 kb/s) even an option ?

Am I to assume that the entire thing is going to be recompressed to 8,000 kb/s ?

Thanks for the tips

Mike

You don't say which settings you selected for your MPEG output. But the ideal MPEG for use as source video for DVD Architect is 720x480 DVD-NTSC-quality MPEG (YUV color at 6 Mbps) using PCM 16 bit Stereo audio at a 48000 sample rate. Anything else will need to be re-encoded or recompressed by DVD Architect.

And, of course, video that exceeds the capacity of a DVD disc (over 70 minutes long) will also need to be recompressed.

Which settings did you select for your video and audio?

Thanks Steve for the reply.

I used the Vegas Pro template for NTSC DVD 720x480 video stream and the template for the AC3 pro. But, that really not the issue since those are compliant and don't require re-compression. Duration is fine.

It's the menu. That's non-complaint and made within DVD Architect.

So, my convoluted question is: Since the menu has to be re-encoded to be compliant then does everything else ? Plus, what is with the optimize bitrate slider ? I think I worded this better in my first post.

Thanks.

I believe that menus will always recompress, regardless of their content. That doesn't affect the preparation of compliant title streams, however, assuming the total prepared content (including menus) does not exceed 4.35GB..

Thanks for that confirmation musicvid.

Now could someone explain why in the Optimize window, there is a bitrate slider and why you would want to use it if you've already prepared the main streams ? In my case, my MPEG2 bitrate is 6K and I noticed the slider was set for 8K. Is this slider (or for that matter the entire optimize option) strictly for allowing DVD Architect to compress ?

Pretty much, yes. The slider is basically for reducing the quality of your video so that more can fit on your disc. (It can be set automatically by clicking the Fit to Disc button.)

Moving the slider to increase the bitrate won't improve your original video, of course. You can only get as good out as you put in.
