mixed formats

If I have pictures at both 4:3 and 16:9 and I render the project at 4:3 will the 16:9 pix come out weird?

Try it and see. I would expect that whatever you see in the preview is what you will get after the render.

By default, the 16:9 pictures will be reduced to fit inside the frame, leaving black bars on the top and bottom. If you open pan/crop on them and right-mouse-button click in the framing rectangle you can choose "Match output aspect". This will zoom in on them until they fill the frame, but some of the left & right edges will be cut off.
