Mixer Preview Fader in version 8c

Does anyone else have an issue with the Mixer Preview Fader functionality in Vegas 8c?

While working through this Digital Audio and Video Production book, I was trying to use the preview fader. But as soon as I touch the fader with the mouse to move it up or down, and the sound instantly stops. Playback just simply stops dead. I only have version 8c on my laptop at work, so I need to try it at home on 8.1. I searched in the forum archives, but didn't find anything about it.

Thanks.

Auto preview is dependent on the media having focus in the Explorer window, Project Media window, whatever. When you clicked the fader, the media item in the list lost focus. So, it stops previewing.

Same thing happens when you auto preview a video or image. If you click something else, the video preview stops.

Far as I know, this is how it's always been.

Thanks Rob, but that doesn't make sense to me...

It doesn't really make too much sense that you cannot adjust volume of your previews on-the-fly, does it? I mean, if adjusting the preview fader actually takes focus away from preview and thus stops it...you'd have to restart the preview, adjust the volume, restart the preview, adjust the volume, etc. etc. etc. I apologize if I misunderstood what you were trying to say and thus am all wet here--but I seriously doubt that's what is going on. On page 18 of the SCS book, under Task 4: Previewing audio files, number 5:

While the file pays, drag the volume fader up to increase the preview volume or down to decrease the volume. Notice that the volume meters give you a visual representation of the volume of the file.

And in the text for Figure 2.3 on the next page, it states: The Preview fader allows you to monitor and adjust the volume of the audio as you preview it.

So to me this implies that you are supposed to be able to use the slider on the fly, just like any other slider. Hence, it shouldn't remove focus and kill the preview playback, IMO. Does this make sense--did I explain myself clearly? I must not be doing something correctly, I am guessing...

Thanks for the post.

It actually seems to be a bug.

There is a way to override:
Click onto the media in the Explorer. Click onto the Preview slider. Start preview playback. Adjust the slider.

And actually, it's the same as in version 8.1; click on the preview fader with a clip paying in preview, and it kills the preview. But surely someone else has to have noticed this?

See my previous post. I edited it and described a workaround.

Thanks Rob, but that doesn't make sense to me...

You want an answer that "makes sense" or one that's correct? You've just confirmed that the same behavior is in 8.1, and I can tell you right now it's the same in 6.0. I suppose you might consider it a bug, but if it is it's not a new one.

Marco's workaround works fine for me.

LOL...I understand, and the work-around does work here as well. So that's what I will do then.

Thanks guys.
