Mixing HDV and SD

Here's a question for experienced folks only -

I'm mixing a bunch of scenes shot on both HDV and SD.

If I leave the SD with black side borders (full height) - will the average end user's monitor "jump around" trying to "fix" the image to full screen - i.e. - blow it up?

I can alleviate the question by simply applying a 1440x1080 backplate under the SD footage, but I like the sold black borders.

What are your experiences here?

Once you render the output the SD scenes won't be 4:3 anymore. They'll be 16:9 with the black areas included as part of the image. Nothing that plays back the video willh have any way of detecting that the black borders aren't part of the original 4:3 image, so it will play the whole thing as 16:9, since that's what it really is.

Mixing what ever you want on the timeline is one of Vegas's strong points. I've used other programs and it's a pain to do this. Vegas makes it easy.
