Mixing XAVC and AVCHD/Mp4 raw footage in a Vegas P

CeeDee1947 wrote on 9/25/2014, 8:53 AM
I am considering purchasing the new Sony PXW-X70 cam as a main cam and using my Canon XA20 with a teleconverter for close ups only. The Canon can capture: 35Mbps mp4 recording as well as AVCHD rate of 28 Mbps. The Sony captures in XAVC format and next year a 4K upgrade is promised for this cam.

QUESTION: Will I be able to mix the footage in a Vegas Pro 12 project without any issues? Both XAVC and AVCHD/ Mp4 and later, 4K footage with AVCHD/ Mp4 (I am fully cogniscent of the proxy files technique for editing 4K files with VP12)

Full XAVC support was added in Vegas Pro 13 afaik.

XAVC/XAVC-S showed up in the middle of the V12 produce cycle. Initially import only and later render as.

With the Sony camera you want VegasPro13 + and probably Catalyst Prepare from Sony. Nothing less than that. The Canon XA20 would really NOT be a good second unit as it is very basic design and codec will cause you to degrade the quality of overall production - you are lowering your standards unnecessarilty with this combo.

On the other hand a better second unit would be the XF105 at very least.

What would be the point of that? If CeeDee was going to buy another camera, the PXW-X70 is substantially cheaper than the XF105. (New that is)

Hmmm Arthur.S hmmm, are you thinking this thru ??... take the camera specs into compare. Now granted you do have to keep in mind the Sony is cheap - which if you dig into that means there are some huge compromises to get this camera design to market. And since it is untested as yet, it may mean that it does not perform. This is always a dilemma.

When a person really wants to buy 1st and 2nd units - you should be comparing specs and not price! The lesson here - is that for the money spent - it would be best for the OP to buy two of the Sony at the same time. Just remains to be seen whether this camera is a good performer. I know the Canon XF105 is!

The man sez he's buying a Sony PXW-X70. What I'm saying is; If he wants the best match to that cam...buy another one! Especially as it's a lot cheaper than an XF-105. He's not asking how it performs etc.

Don't know the answer to that, but I'd have thought a bit of digging around will enable you to download some XAVC/4K samples and give it a try.

As for the OPs question. In my opinion it is yes, there is no issue in mixing the various outputs in VP12 since VP12 can handle XAVC.

I also would see no issue with the new PXW-X70. It will perform well, very well even, knowing how well the AX100 does in my house.

I do have 4K samples but those are from the AX100. All I can say is, you need a beefy hardware to wrestle that kind of footage.

Thanks guys appreciate your comments and suggestions. If I was a pro videographer I would go with the Canon XF205 but as an inspired amateur, it is a hefty price for me to pay. The idea of a second PXW-X70 though does appeal for reasons of compatibility. I probably with go with this option.

XAVC Long GOP 50 Mbps (MXF) files created with PXW-X70 do not import into Vegas 12 or 13. XAVC-S from an AX100 will import because it uses an MP4 wrapper. This is from first hand experience.

If someone out there can prove me wrong, please explain your workflow. I'd love to start using my Sony PXW-X70 to it's full potential. Right now AVCHD is the best Vegas can handle.

This morning I spoke with a Sony product specialist 'Lou' who was unaware of the x70 import issue. He is checking on this. I plan to purchase a number of X70 cams depending on his research outcome.

If anybody is interested, I posted XAVC-L MXF and AVCHD MTS files in the Vegas Pro Video forum titled "Can't Import XAVC from PXW-X70 into Sony Vegas". You can download and try these 2 files for yourself before you spend $2300 on a Sony PXW-X70 camcorder like I just did.

AS I mentioned in the other thread, I can open the MXF file in Catatlyst Browse and then export it from there to XAVC Intra 100Mbps which works fine with VP13&12

OldSmoke is correct. Please see the other thread, "Can't Import XAVC from PXW-X70 into Sony Vegas", for the workaround. Thanks OldSmoke.
