MJPEG and Vegas.

Ok I have Vegas Pro 8.1 and I just bought a Nikon D5000 DSLR last friday (6-19-09). For those of you who might not know it shoots video at 720p 24p in the MJPEG AVI Format.

Now I Shot some video over the weekend and wanted to edit it. I import my footage into Vegas and edit what i need with out a problem and try to render it.. Here is where everything goes south...

When I watch the preview screen as its rendering I see that some of the clips are just blank. I played the video after it rendered and there is sound from the camera in my project but no video. Im new to the whole DSLR video. Ive edited many many videos with Vegas with out this problem. I go back into the timeline and try to see whats going on and some of the clips on the timeline are blank as well but it wasn't like this when I first imported and edited my clips. I try rerendering my video and some of the clips that were blank now show my video as they should and others that were working now dont work. its completely random and im really getting frustrated... Ive tried Rendering in different formats like .avi .wmv .mt2 and its the same. Sometimes ive restarted vegas and I can see ever clip in the timeline just fine and when I go to render it same random black clips.

Ive searched around looking for answers but nothing is working. Some sites say that I need the MJPEG codec and have posted links. I install the codec and nothing happens. It says on the Q&A to convert avi files to DV-AVI using Windows Movie maker. Now I have a few problems with this.

1. Im shooting HD video. And DV-AVI is not HD

2. I have lots of clips. Does this mean I have to convert each and ever clip?

Is there anything I can do to make this work? Does Vegas pro 9 fix this?

I dont know what to do anymore. If i cant make this work Im going to have to return the camera because sony vegas cant edit anything....

Thanks Tim

Yeah, it looks like you still don't have your codec issue sorted.

If you haven't already, try the trial version of the MainConcept MJPEG codec.
It has proven to work in most instances and you don't need the full version to decode.

You shouldn't have two MJPEG codecs on your machine at the same time. Uninstall one before installing the other.

Others are Morgan, Lead, and PicVideo.

Another thing you can do is upload 30 sec. of your raw MJPEG camera footage somewhere and let us take a look at it.

I installed The MainConcept MJPEG codec Demo and Tried to Open the project I was previously was working on and still got some blank clips. I did a test on an completely new Test Project to see if I have to create a New Project to have the Codec applied. And It came out Perfect. No blank clips. Im going to remake my movie in a new project and pray to god (or sony) that it is successful as well.

The problem is, is that you are using the 64 bit version of Vegas Pro 8. The 32 bit version (Vegas 8.0c) reads MJPEG AVI files fine, but I've never tried what you are doing. It may may just be a bug, because both versions use the same built-in codec to access MJPEG files. If the built-in option is broken, you would need a 64 bit VFW codec for MJPEG, so you may not be able to find such a beast. Stick to 32 bit.

Hmm how can I convert vegas to 32 bit?

Do you think Just reinstalling Vegas would help?

I tried that but it didnt work. I unistalled vegas 8.1 and reinstalled 8.0b and updated to 8.0c im rendering the project now and i'll see if that works.

Vegas 8.1 x64 was nice freebie , but there were a lot of quirks that SCS worked out, before releasing the 64 bit version of Vegas Pro 9.0.

Has anyone had any luck (or problems) with MJPEG in V9 x64? The new Panny GH-1 hybrid DSLR has a number of MJPEG modes for video (not that I have one), so I'd be curious how it works in 64 bit V9.

T-Mothy,

Glad you got it working. We aim to please!

Looked at some of your work. A little rough on technique and disconnected in spots, yet you have some talent!

Keep working, and good luck.
