mm advice please....

i've never used (let alone loaded) media manager since i had no real use for it - all my stock dv tapes were tc logged, and my stock shot hdv on hd, neatly chopped and named.....

now, i have over 30 hrs of hdv taped artist interviews which i need to break up into relevant sections, such as; talking about environment, talking about art, talking about technique, etc.,

obviously if it was going to be on one project i could use bins, though i've had problems in the past dragging sub clips from one project to another and losing names.....

so, my question is, is media manager my best option (i mean, will it even do what i'm after!)?

is media manager reliable (my only notions about it's operation were gleaned from this board)?

if not, what would be my alternatives, bearing in mind the various 'sub clips' might well be used in a number of projects, not necessarily related to the original one.

thanks

leslie

btw - can i install mm in say 9 / 64, but not in 9 /32 on the same pc?

This is why I love the trimmer in Vegas. I use regions to mark my long interview sections with notes and when I need them I just double click the region and drag to the timeline. I find the trimmer very easy (visually) to search through when stretched across my monitor screen.

Personally I stopped using the MM a while ago because it was so buggy but have thought about trying it out again.

Take care, Marc

thanks for that marc,

in the past i've used the trimmer to create sub clips, never thought about regions though.

however, what about searching?

eg. i have 4 different artists on four different tapes that at some point talk about, say, oil paint. one way or another i intend to 'log' these tapes and what i want to be able to do (if possible) is have some sort of 'search box' into which i can enter a key word(s) that'll bring up all my takes logged as 'oil paint'.

of course all material will be on line since there's no batch capture with hdv (worse luck ;-()

i remember reading about mm being buggy, but i don't know whether it's developed into a life bouy or a lead weight nowadays.

living in hope,

Just a crazy thought from the big smoke. Couldn't you use Excel or Access to catalog all your clips. Then they're searchable etc.
Sure you're still going to have to cut and paste but you can do what you want with your 'database' including printing out reports etc.

The Media Manager doesn't support subclips so it would be useless to you for this kind of work. :(

I'm not sure why the Media Manager hasn't seen any updates since it's original introduction but I'm sure everyone whining about having to install MS SQL Server and forcing Sony to make it a separate install didn't leave Sony with the impression that investing any more time into it was money well spent. It's a shame really because it has a lot of potential if it was a little better integrated into Vegas. I think it is a brilliant idea and have all of my Digital Juice content cataloged in it where it's easy to find. I know Grazie uses it all the time too.

Yes, you can turn on and off which version of Vegas uses the Media Manager in the preferences.

Leslie, here is the process I use for long interviews, etc.

Bring a long clip into the trimmer. Like mentioned by someone else, create regions around soundbites or sections that interest you and give each region a good descriptive name. Then doubeclick the region and add to the timeline.

Continue this process through all of the clips and you will end up with a honking long timeline with all your region clips layed consecutively.

Then, using Ultimate S, go to the Markers (i think it is) tab and check the one that says something like create regions from embedded markers. I've found that I must highlight all clips on the timeline to get this to work properly. You should now have a timeline that shows all of your regions on the timeline as well.

This is important because you can use the free "Go To" extension to easily see and navigate all of your region titles in one place. Now, simply clicking on any one entry via 'Go To" will automatically take you to that specific region clip on the timeline AND begin automatically playing the clip. So all of your clip hunting and navigation can be done via "Go To" if you like. Find the clip you want to paste over into another instance of Vegas and you are off and running to edit your master.

Additionally, you may also in Ultimate S, check the Markers tab check the box that says something like create sub-clips from embedded regions and also check the naming box with "Use Active Take name". This will create hundreds of subclips for you automatically with the same name as the region had. You can then move them into different bins if you like according to content and choose to find and edit your clips using this method.

I actually use both methods as sometimes I want to find clips according to bin structures I have created or sometimes I want to find a clip according to the region name I gave it and "Go To" is the most efficient way to find the clip and immediately begin playing the clip.

Hope this lengthy post makes some sense.

thanks erikd, a couple of reads and i think i've got it!

what i really miss is scenealyzer - i'v often thought that for what i want it might well be worth rendering all my hdv tapes out to dv, then running them through scenealyzer - if nothing else just to get a html scene report.....

oh well, obviously time to start playing with all the options and see what works best....

thanks everyone,

leslie

UPDATE - apparently mm's m$ sql is 'incompatible' with win 7/64 - and there's, as yet, no fix.... so, bang goes that idea....

btw erikd, can i sort the 'goto' list, say alphabetically?

Oh yea, I forgot it wasn't compatible with 64-bit. I don't use the 64-bit version because too much doesn't work with it so i would recommend using the 32-bit version anyway,

thanks jr....

anyway, downloaded sp3 (sql), installed 32bit version on 7/64, and now have what appears to be a functioning mm.

i see the theory of mm, but unfortunately i don't see how it would work for me - ie, logging an hour hdv tape. i mean i can import the tape into the library, tag it or whatever, view it in vegas preview window, but not, as far as i've found, marked say, time code 1.24.15 > 1.35.10 as 'oil paint'....

any furher pointers most welcome.....

Yes, you can. You can also sort according to region length as well as position on timeline. If you remember any key word from a region, just begin typing that word in the box and it will automatically update as you type to show options containing what you are typing. Works pretty nice.
