Monitor not showing footage after render?

Hi guys and gals,

I'm having difficulty figuring out why my rendered files are not allowing me to play them on my windows media player. I have a split monitor video card and my project files are on my left monitor and my windows media player screen automatically opens up on my right screen when I attempt to play a rendered file. I saw a file play once but, that has been it and I don't know what I did (or didn't do( to make that happen. I have not done anything different between any of the tests I have done to see if the files will play in my wmp screen. The odd thing is is that the player will play for the length of the video but, it only shows a black screen. Any help would be appreciated!

Jim

You have to tell us what your source video is and what render settings you're using.

We can't help you without knowing what you specifically did.

Are you getting audio?

Hi MSmart,

Thanks for getting back with me. I'm totally new to VMS and any editing software developed after 2000. I was doing tape to tape even when I first started editing. So things have changed so much on me. I'm starting from scratch I guess you could say. Sorry for being clueless.

To the best of my knowledge here is what I had for my settings on one project that is not playing back on the monitor via WMP:

File Type: Video for Windows (*avi)
Template: NTSC DV
Description: Audio: 48,000Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, PCM Uncompressed,
Video: 29.97 fps, 720x480, lower field first
Pixel Aspect Ration: 0.909, Open DML compatible.
NTSC DV video files compatible with Sony Video Capture.

I am rendering the loop region only.

I render the item by checking off "Render As" under the project menu. I make sure the file name is correct and click "Save". The item renders in a few seconds as my clip is only 5 seconds long. It dumps the project to my external drive and when I choose "open folder" it brings up a folder named "renders." At this moment, following this process, my file shows an icon with a WMP logo on it and is black 99% of the time, not showing anything but, the film frame logo with the WMP logo.. When the file will play on my 2nd monitor via WMP, there is a still of the first frame of my file in the "WMP" icon in the render folder. Again...after rendering and opening the folder, .I have seen the file Icon with a still picture of the first frame of the file only twice. The other 10 times or so I've opened the folder and looked at the icon of the rendered file, the frame is black....and it will not play anything...not even audio. But, it does play a black screen for about 4 seconds...approximately the length of my video file length. I had been experiencing a jittery playback prior to rendering my files back a few days ago and someone suggested reinstalling my video drivers? Could this possibly fix this problem as well? I have no idea on how to reinstall my drivers but, I will call tech support for that if I attempt to do that.

If I should need to give more detail, please let me know where I should reference that information as I do not know how to pull up anymore detail than what I have listed above. Thanks again for any help you can render.

What format, file type, template, and codec are you rendering to? What custom settings have you chosen?

Yes, what render settings.

Download this very useful application, MediaInfo, open your rendered file with it and post the Text View results here.

Added: Also let us know what you plan to do with the video. Upload to youtube, burn to DVD, etc?
