External preview at Full (Best). But as you add transitions and filters it will reduce the quality until rendered.

Use a higher output (signal quality) jack assuming your TV/monitor supports the input.

In order of quality, best first:

pure digital
component
S video
composite (yuck)

If you render in good quality, then preview at good quality.

Sometimes good looks better than best. Most of the time you can't tell the difference, although best takes a lot longer to render.
