monitoring while recording new track

There is probably something simple that I'm completely overlooking here, but I cannot figure out how to monitor my tracks while recording without them being recorded onto the new track (e.g. when I hear my drums to record guitar track, the new track has drums as well as guitar.) If anyone could tell me how to hear my tracks without re-recording them, I would be eternally grateful. Thanks.

It sounds like your sound card is set up to record its outputs.

What type of sound card are you using?

I'm using a soundblaster live gamer audio card. This is my first attempt at software based music recording so I'm not sure if the card itself has to be configured a certain way. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Go to the audio mixer control panel (usually accessed by
double-clicking the little yellow speaker in the task tray), click
Options, Properties, and select Recording. The mixer will change to
show your inputs. You probably have Mixed Output selected now. This
means that the recording will "hear" any sound flowing through your
system. Select Line instead. Then the only thing that will be recorded
will be the signal coming in the line input jack on the sound card. You
will still be able to monitor any combination of tracks through your
speakers or headphones.

This recording mixer panel is also where you will set the recording
level.
