Mono to Stereo

Does anybody have a method of rendering a mono audio track to stereo? Or how about switching the mono track from the right to the left, or vice versa?

If you import a mono soundtrack to the timeline it is there as a left and a right channel - stereo - with the same sound in left and right channel, however, and this gives no audible stereo effect.

Panning from channel to channel is easy in VMS: insert audio pan - this gives you a red line where you can doubleclick anchor-points that can be moved up and down moving the sound from left to right and back.
