(more) capture problems

Im posting this for somebody i work with, so hopfully all my info is right..

there are two problems when captureing, screen shots can be seen at this url: http://www.newliferanch.com/folders.asp?action=display&record=102

the first problem is banding or stripping across the frame. from what i understand this is usually a camera problem (heads?)

the second is a little more complicated, the frame is simply jumbled, if a clip has this problem and is then recaptured it will be correct.

both problems only show up occasionaly, most of the time everything works great, so really its not a big deal, unless it happens to ruin a clip you really need and is very hard to reproduce.

so...any thoughts on what might cause these particular problems would be great, but i think what i am more interested in knowing is how to go about tracing down capture problems. it seems like there are so many variables im not sure where to start, or how to isolate individual variables and test them.

thanks for your help and thoughts.

first is dirty heads.
Second looks to be corruption at the start of a clip event that the camera doesn't quite recover from. Usually, rewinding a bit before the junk will help.
Also, based on shots, you might reduce the size of the preview window so it's not so large. Slower computer systems have issues with large preview windows.

Wow, you took the question right out of my mouth. The same problem you have in the bottom picture started happening to me recently. take a look: http://www.sevillemedia.com/images/screencap.jpg
It turned out to be a caused by a drive to which I was capturing. In the last week I did a lot of moving and deleting of files but did not defrag the drive. It had such a tough time capturing and allocating space that it would literally stutter ( you can actually hear that during the capture )
Anyways, freeing up a bit more space and defragging the drive did the trick, no more square blotches.
