More Effects Like Pinnacle Studio?

stevefoobar wrote on 10/2/2008, 2:50 PM
I've moved over to Vegas Movie Studio from Pinnacle Studio some time ago but admit to keeping my Pinnacle Studio installed because it has a superior selection and quantity of effects, not to mention that most of them are easier to use than those in Vegas, in my opinion of course.

Just two examples of this off the top of my head are an automaic color correction effect and an automatic image stabiliization effect in Studio that are both missing from Vegas.

Don't get me wrong--Vegas is far superior to Studio in most other ways, especially handling and editing of multiple audio tracks, however, I would love it if someone has found free or inexpensive effects that can be downloaded for Vegas similar to some of the effects in Studio so I don't have to keep going back and forth between the two applications.

I would love nothing more than to uninstall Studio once and for all, believe me!

Thanks

I fully agree that a video stabilization plugin is much needed. I was arguing about it last year as well, because 99% of the consumers never use a tripod. To get that now you need to buy a $200 BorisFX plugin package: http://borisfx.com/product/fx/index.php

However, nothing else is much needed. Color Correction is really easy to do on Vegas, you just need to know how. But after you do, it's just 2 clicks away.

Most of the other plugins, when used in a chain, can do things that Pinnacle or Ulead can only dream of doing with their canned abilities.

For stabilization, not a perfect answer since it goes outside of Vegas, but you might look up Deshaker for VirtualDub, which is free. I remember seeing some before/after samples of this that looked semi-impressive...

Or you can use Mercalli from within Vegas. But not free.

Yes, I've heard of Deshaker for VirtualDub, but I don't want to go outside of Vegas because I can just use Pinnacle Studio if I were going to do that, since it has this and many more effects lacking in Vegas. Oh and by the way, you can chain effects in Studio also and get more complex effects but that's not really the point. I'm trying to find free or inexpensive effects plugins that will work inside Vegas that will give me similar effects as Studio, which generally has much more creative effects than Vegas (distortion effects, creative effects, fire effects, fog effects, lighting control effects, etc. etc.). I just don't see these in Vegas unless I'm completely missing something.

So far, I'm not finding these types of affordable effects for Vegas.

You cannot use Mercalli within Vegas Movie Studio. It will only work within Vegas Pro (though its ease of use is such that I wish it did).

I have tried various de-shaker options. The Deshaker for VirtualDub option, which is free, works quite well but the process is a bit laborious especially if you have several clips that you want to stabilize.

It would be great if Sony put a stabilization plug-in into Vegas Movie Studio; it is probably the one "significant" plug-in that is missing. I would even be willing to buy a plug-in that works with Movie Studio - but not at the cost of the BorisFX package

I agree with what you are saying. If I were to pick the achiles heel of Vegas over Pinnacle Studio it would probably be the lack of equivalent effects, many of which come standard with Studio and many others that are reasonably priced.

I guess I'll have to stick with keeping Studio around just to have access to some of these effects--bummer. You might considern spending the $80 -$100 or so to get these effects in Studio and do the same thing because you will never find the equivalent effects for anywhere near that price for Vegas, it appears.

If you just want more effects then look for DebugMode's Wax which plugs right into Vegas, and also with some limitations, Vegas Movie Studio. I tested it last with VMS 8.0 PE but ended up uinstalling it after I had some crashes on exit - may be unrelated, but I didn't want to spend time on that.

Himanshu - could you explain how you got Wax to work with Vegas Movie Studio please.
stevefoobar wrote on 10/7/2008, 12:16 AM
Thanks for the info on DebugMode Wax. I read thru the forums and it appears to be rather buggy and internitent on Sony Vegas 8 but I didn't see any recent posts about Vegas 9. Also some people seemed to indicate the Movie Studio versions work as well as the pro versions. Anyway, I'm intrigued enough to probably download and try it with my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.

I tried Wax but could not get this to work with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum v9.0a - hence my easrlier question.

Wax help file & DebugMode's forums have all the answers about running Wax with SVMS. All you really need to do is turn off the script option in the settings to get started. Beyond that I think there was a bug where you had to click on the SVMS app window or the effect properties window to get the app to respond IIRC, but that was with SVMS 8 PE. Like I said, the crash-on-exit with Wax 2.0e installed turned me off and so I uninstalled it, so I can't be much more help.
