More new computer problems and a question

I find myself again seeking the wisdom of those here... You never failed me yet!
After installing Vegas 8 on my new laptop (and wiping it off my old one) I find I cannot put MPEG-2 files on the time line. It refuses! Help

one more question:
Vegas 9, did I miss an e-mail. It says my update cost is $239... I like $189 better. Is there a link or something?

Thanks
JonG

I believe you need to install (reinstall?) DVDA to get the MPEG codec.

As long as you have a registered copy of Vegas Pro X you get the discount - just enter the serial number in the order form on line and it will work for you until the offer expires June 30th.

New to Vegas Pro 8.1, Vista 64.. Cam is a Sony DCR-85 video in MPEG-2 format.

Getting green thumbnails in the timeline that do play back in the preview window and red thumbnails that don't playback. Sometimes Vegas won't recognize the MPEG2 files at all from Explorer or Media Manager.. Came looking for help and found this thread and wondered if some one would point me to the above mentioned dvda codec? I also see some folks taking the time to convert their MPEG2 files to .AVI - is that the better solution? If so, what converter program is most reccomended? One last thing, does anyone know if MPEG-2 will be better supported in the coming Vegas 9? I saw it showed "MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Support" in the list of Tech Specs but wondered if anyone had any inside info?

Thanks folks!
