More Vegas 5 Specs Arrive

Some of this is new and, for people like me, pretty exciting (bezier masking, subclips, end-actions, etc. -- basically the wishlist of features for a DV filmmaker... hope to see RS422 control, too)

Vegas 5:

-3D motion and compositing
-Keyframable bezier masking
-Control surface support
-Envelope automation recording
-Auto-input record monitoring
-Film-style 5.1 surround panning
-Real-time A/V event reverse
-Media Subclip creation
-Customizable keyboard mapping
-Networked rendering
-And much more...

Vegas+DVD Architect:

-End actions
-Multiple audio tracks
-Subtitle support
-24p DVD encoding
-Elementary Stream Import
-Project overview window
-Real-time external monitor previews
-And much more...

Apparently these points appear on the back of the latest issue of Digital Videomaker.

Any ideas on media subclip creation?

Is this similar to nested timelines?

Regards, Paul

Media subclips to me would be the ability to take a section of a long clip and drop it into another folder creating a virtual clip of your selection. It's something Vegas is missing that Premiere has and will be a welcome addition.

In regards to the masking do you think this means we can make our own shapes within Vegas and keyframe them like After Effects? That would would be fantastic!

If thats the extent of it, I can here all the critics going ballistic over the following:

1. No EDL's LOL
2. No complete revision of media management tools
3. No support of hardware.

What you posted makes sense in that I really believe that Vegas is Vegas---the best damn tool for DV editing on the planet.

About subclips :

My guess is you'll be able to drag an event in the media pool. Pretty cool. I assume that those events will preserve any fx they hav even when deleted from the timeline (as long as they are in the pool)

Also, about masking, I assume it will look something like this :

Subclips could be capable of having media effects applied to them. This would be consistant with current Vegas methods. Basically you get to see ranges from media files displayed as objects in the bins and with MediaFX applied. Be nice if they could have velocity effects applied as well.

Just a guess.

My guess would be it would be at the event fx level rather than media since media is global for a full media clip.

My only problem is that I am doing a low-budget indie feature which won't be able to export a universally readable EDL to another NLE. I want to do a rough cut and then forward the footage to a pro who edited an Oscar-winning picture, but he would work in Avid. I lose "X" amount of creative control in trying to collaborate with someone who doesn't have Vegas.

Please keep in mind this is not the complete feature set !

Being an audio user (remember folks, Vegas was originally an audio-only app) I dearly hope there's some significant new audio features and upgrades. Otherwise there's going to be some severely disappointed users in the audio forum.

So if you really need EDL support right now, there is always Cui-Bono. Used by many different software manufacturers to get from app A to app B. It's not just a Vegas thing. And as this month's DV Mag says in a Premiere review, EDL shifting is just about a dead function anyway. Not commenting at all on what is or isn't in Vegas' future, but letting you know there ARE alternatives.

Control surface support doesn't do it for you, Ben?
rextilleon wrote on 4/13/2004, 8:09 PM
The way I figure it is that Vegas will remain primarily a DV editor. Over time it will evolve to support HDV. I don't expect anything more. and quite frankly, I am extremely happy working in this format. In another life I used 16mm film exclusively and find DV and Vegas to extremely liberating and functional. I have done more shooting and editing in the last three years then I did in the 10 years I shot 16mm.

Hmm, well depends on the implemenation and, frankly, what's supported. Even then, that alone doesn't really do it. Was hoping for at least basic midi implemenation.

>>> So if you really need EDL support right now, there is always Cui-Bono<<<

Keep in mind that EDL Convert Pro only deals with audio....unless Cui-Bono have re-thought their stand on the picture side. When I asked them if they were going to add full EDL support they said they had been planning on it but droppped it because they wanted to stick with audio only. This was at least a year ago they said this, and they said they had no plans to develop it beyond audio EDL support.

I spoke with another company who makes a like EDL conversion program and asked if they planned on putting any sort Vegas support in and they told me that, you will love this, no one really used Vegas and there would be no market for adding Vegas EDL support. Beyond that I only know of one program that will deal with Vegas - and it is a plug-in for After Effects that allows you to import a Vegas EDL into AE.

P.S - just an add on...kind of out loud talking to myself here - I came across a few minor mentions of Vegas 5. Nothing earth shattering really, but one of them mentions about a few things that may be available in Version 5.0b. So I am thinking "Version 5 is not even out yet and already talk of a 'b' version? Is this a good thing? Has Bill Gates secretly taken over Sony?" But again - this really was nothing massive, just sort of a little thing that caught my eye.

yeah, i remember working on flatbed editors with 4 tracks of mag tape and *real* media bins... i mean the kind where the media hangs from clothes-pins; and where my "trimmer" was literatlly a film splicer and a roll of tape. geesh. editing has come a long, *long* way.

Yeah, I'm with Nat. I don't think the 5.0b thing is any indication of a problem.

We saw that with Vegas 4.0b, it was a free release that gave new functionality. I like that they make sure they product they release will be stable. No point in rushing HD out the door if it scares people off because of a few bugs.

So, why is it that we still don't have any official information on this site. On the main web site for Sony Vegas.

Sony wants to pop the balloon at NAB. It would be stupid to let more air out of it before that.
Besides, even though I'm not a programmer I can easily see that those who are have lists of what they want to do, what they must do sometime and what they must do before a particular event like NAB. Some features must wait to allow them to have something presentable at the chosen presentation. That is so obvious I'm surprised it's being questioned here. You don't really think that on the morning after NAB they meet up and say "What should we do now?". If I thought that I would be looking for another NLE.

Everything sounds good, but I didn't see anything about improvements in the title generator. To me, that's the one flaw in Vegas. Everywhere else it beats the competition hands down.

I don't know diddly about marketing and was one of the many that wondered why Sony didn't reveal more about V5. You have put it into terms I now understand Tor....thanks!
