MOTU 2408 MKII Playback Problems

Fader2000 wrote on 11/18/2002, 7:02 PM
I recently posted a message saying I was having problems recording 24Bit 48KHz with my MOTU 2408 in Vegas. I took the advice of a few people and made the jump to XP with much success. I'm now trying to tweak the performance of the hardware and software to avoid any gapping problems. I've set the MOTU 2408's buffer to 128 and this seems to help but there is still some minor gapping issues. Is there anything else I can do to avoid gapping that I'm not doing right now? Any info on this would be much appreciated.

I was talking to MOTU tech support today and they have some WinXP PCI-324 driver updates coming, when he didn't want to say but he recommended 256 buffer size.
256 runs pretty well for me.

That's good to know. I'll be waiting patiently for that update. I'm running at 128 with no problems so far.

Happy to hear that you are up and running.
How do you like XP so far?
I have it installed on both systems here.I called MOTU because I had problems getting my (parallel) MOTU Midi Timepiece AV drivers to show up. Well after two days and about 15 un-installs later I did a fresh install of the MTPAV Console AND LPT port checker everything now works fine. I never did that on Win98se,oh well live and learn.

Happy Tracking, George

I can *only* run Vegas successfully with the the MOTU buffer on it's smallest setting. Celery 1G1, XP.

Also, have you done the standard XP tweaks as at :

Let us know when the new MOTU driver is out !

Glad I found this thread and I'm not the only one suffering this - thought I was going mad - I have spent the last two weeks pulling my machine to bits and reconfiguring it using every conceivable setup spec - even to the point of ripping out all my hardware but for the video card and the PCI324 and still get the clicking and popping under XP - Even Windows 2000 hasn't been completely click free - I really hope that MOTU sort this out or I may have go back to Win 98 (shudders)

I have trouble with my 2408/2 at any buffer setting *other* than minimum (64). But no problems at all when set to that (even with the supposed increased CPU drain).

My main problem is that now I want a 2408/3 because it's got more lights. Plus all the SPMTE stuff built-in, should I ever feel inclined to fire up my DA-88 again....

Just had a whiz round some other forums - one suggestion (since this seems to be a driver issue) is to use the older first release win2k WDM drivers (the one without the GSIF driver option) - that MIGHT cure it - will try and get hold of it and see.

What kind of motherboard/CPU do you use with the PCI-324??
A lot of Via chipsets Motherboards with a AMD processor are giving troubles!!!!
(Also some very small amount of Intel chipset motherboards with a P4.)
I was using a MSI board with a KT333 chipset and ...only troubles!
Some Via chipsets are having PCI latency problems(not only old via chipsets also new ones in combination with the PCI-324)
Please check this first before you tweak your self to dead!

In short, no. In fact, it's all above board bits, Intel PIII and chipset mobo, Adaptec SCSI controller, modern matrox video, no cheap OEM bits at all. Moreover, it worked fine in 98, but I don't want to go back to 98 since then I have to go back to lots of crashing. I'm aware of the VIA chipset issue (try a bios update from their site BTW) - I've seen a history of problems with VIA/SIS/UMC chipsets for all sort of stuff and hence avoid them if I can. I'm waiting to hear back from MOTU for confirmation. Meantime, if anybody else has the original first release drivers for win 2k/xp, let me know how you get on.

Cheers

Same problem here! I've had my 2408 running sweet before and after pulling apart and reloading, I get rice krispies. I would like to put the motu on it's own IRQ but no matter what slot I use it still wants to share with the video card. I do think that this is the problem not the drivers. I have archived all the releases of the drivers for the motu324 so if you need them please tell me what the release date it was and I will try to find them.

Disable absolutely everything you don't need - including serial ports you don't use in the BIOS - that will free up a couple more IRQ's which P&P can use. I got a USB mouse too which also frees up the PS/2 IRQ too - and now I've got everything sitting on separate IRQ's. Personally I'm not convinced it's an IRQ problem in my case since it's always worked OK in Windows 98. If you haven't tried it you can change your system type from ACPI to standard PC (Device Manager - Computer and disable IRQ steering - it forces the PC to use the IRQ settings specified in the BIOS - but it involves a reinstall of your OS (There is a quick way of doing it too but it's not recommended by MS). FYI I put my 324 on the furthest PCI slot away to the side and the SCSI card and modem next to the AGP video card near the middle which seems to have done the trick in my case.

All XP and chipset problems with the PCI-324 are solved with the new PCI-424(MkIII)!
(this is what motu told me...)

Well, before you throw the 324 in the bin or start juggling IRQ's, try the old WDM drivers - cured the problem for me!

I've archived them if anybody needs to download them:

Didjya install the drivers *before* inserting the card ? ... if that is still the suggested method of installation.

yes i did. this thing is really starting to tic me off.

You could ask on the MOTUPC@yahoogroups.com list.

Unless there is a driver problem it sounds like a mobo incompatiblity, which was *supposed* to have been reduced/fixed with the '424'. I assume that you have tried different PCI slots.

Best of luck ...
