MOV File Size Is Too BIG!

Jeff Cooper wrote on 4/2/2010, 12:09 PM
Hey folks...

I'm trying to render some videos in MOV format, because that's how BlipTV wants it, but the files that I've rendered are literally eleven times larger that the original AVI file that's in the time line.

Example:

I just rendered a MOV File from an eleven minute AVI file.

AVI file size was 2,444,001 KB

MOV file size was 26,758,563 KB

Does anybody know if there are some settings that can be changed to reduce the file size and still have a high quality render?

Thanks, Jeff

Sounds like you're taking a compressed AVI file and rendering it to an uncompressed MOV file. You need to click on "Custom" and change to the proper settings for your render.

Hey...

It's just a regular AVI file that I rendered with Vegas. It hasn't been compressed.

Does anybody know what settings could be changed to reduce the file size?

MOV and AVI are both containers, they can contain video compressed with any one of a variety of codecs each of which will produce a different file size depending on the final bit rate. The resulting filesizes can be huge in the case of uncompressed video to pretty tiny if you compress them with h.264 at a low bitrate.

Based on its file size, it appears that your AVI video may have been compressed with the DV codec and the MOV was rendered uncompressed. You need to select a codec for the MOV container, maybe MJPEG. You should check with BlipTV and see what codec they recommend.

They recommend H.264, but I don't see that codec in the box. I think I saw H.262 and 263. Maybe I can try one of those and see what happens.

Thanks!!

1. Render to h.264 using either the Mainconcept AVC or Sony AVC encoder in Vegas.
2. If they "want" a .mov extension, rename .mp4 to .mov in Windows.
3. Done.

If you are going to be doing this regularly, spend the $29 and get QT Pro. Then you can be sure it is a MOV h264 file. Sometimes the windows MP4 (h264) file is not completely compatible.
