MOV files gagging one of my PCs with Vegas Pro 9e

Hello All,

I have two towers, both HP PCs, one runs System 7 Ultimate, the other runs XP Pro SP3. Both run Vegas Pro 9e, and both have had their QuickTime installations rolled back to 7.6.x to overcome .MOV files not playing on the timeline which apparently is a QuickTime 7.7x glitch.

Both machines are pretty bare-bones, most of the clips I edit are between 5 and 30 minutes with no special effects.

The System 7 Ultimate machine:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ 2.50Ghz
32-bit
SP1
3GB RAM

The XP Pro machine:
Intel Core 2 QUAD CPU 2.4Ghz
32-but
SP3
3GB RAM

My main camera is an EX-1, I shoot files at 1080 30p, and at the advice of another cameraman with more experience than I, I convert my files to .MXF and use those for editing.

I have edited hundreds of clips on the XP Pro machine using the .MXF files, I have rendered many clips in 720 and 1080 on this machine without an issue.

Then I get a gig with a customer who supplies me files to edit, some of which are .MOV files created on a Canon 5D. When I go to render a clip (they require .mp4 @2Mbps) the render stops at about 4% and gives me the insufficient memory error. So I take the hard drive and plug it into the System 7 Ultimate machine and it renders the files just fine.

I thought it may have been a file length issue, the last 2 clips for this client were in the 20-minute range, so when I did a 7-minute trailer, I figured that should render...but no.

And again, it's JUST the .MOV files, the XP Pro machine does fine with native EX-1 files and the converted .MXF files.

Here is the info on the .MOV files they give me:

I just want to know WHY my XP Pro machine can't deal with these .MOV files. They PLAY fine in Vegas Pro 9e, but the machine just gags on them during rendering. Again, my System 7 machine has no issue with these .MOV files.

And yes, I realize I should upgrade these machines or buy new ones altogether. And I'll do that when the budget allows, which will come at a later date.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers,

wordman
