I use a titler program that gives me 3 choices of *.mov codecs. ProRes aw, QTRLE, and .ProRes ks. Can anybody let me know which would be the best to bring into Vegas Pro please?.

I can't answer your question, but am curious as to what title software you are using.

You can save the title in all 3 formats and see which one plays best in Vegas.

AI Overview

prores_aw and prores_ks are the names of two different open-source FFmpeg encoders for creating Apple ProRes files, while QTRLE refers to the QuickTime Animation codec, not ProRes itself.

FFmpeg ProRes Encoders: prores_aw and prores_ks

FFmpeg, a popular open-source multimedia tool, includes two independent implementations of the Apple ProRes encoder.

prores_aw: Originally developed by Anatoliy Wasserman, this is often the default ProRes encoder in FFmpeg. It is generally on par with the original Apple encoder in quality and performance and works well for standard 4:2:2 video sources.

prores_ks: Developed by Konstantin Shishkov, this encoder is recommended when an alpha channel (transparency) is required because it supports the 4444 color space (Y'CrCb or RGB with alpha). Some tests suggest it may be slightly slower or have different quality characteristics in certain profiles compared to prores_aw, but it is highly regarded for its specific support for alpha channels.

Apple officially states that using any unauthorized implementation of ProRes (such as the FFmpeg versions) may lead to decoding errors, performance degradation, or incompatibility. However, these encoders are widely used in non-Apple professional workflows.

QTRLE

QTRLE is the identifier for the QuickTime Animation codec, an older, lossless or nearly-lossless codec format within a QuickTime (.mov) wrapper. It is not part of the Apple ProRes family of codecs, which use different compression techniques optimized for real-time editing performance. The Animation codec was historically used for motion graphics and content that required an alpha channel before ProRes 4444 became the industry standard.

@pioneer109 I don't know enough about this but, although VP has Quicktime7 I use Apple ProRes 444 for renders with an alpha channel. So given what Google says & that a title from Bluff may well need an alpha channel I suspect 'ProRes ks' is the one you want... 🤷‍♂️

Fixed. Typo corrected.

@pioneer109 All three of those flavors should import quite well into Vegas Pro. Those formats comes with an Alpha Channel for easy compositing and when you drop them on the Vegas timeline, quite often you don't need to change the alpha channel properties, Vegas often automatically picks it up.

In general I'd recommend ProRes as in my recollection the deprecated QT plugin is 32-bit only and has memory limitations.

However there are some bugs with ProRes and alphas in 23 so I'd test a file before setting on a workflow.
