Movie Looks - they're editable!

Regarding the Magic Bullet Movie Looks in V5... OK - so you can't edit the movie looks in the effect window - but you can edit the look presets in Notepad. Go to C:\Program Files\Movie Looks for Vegas\Look Presets and make a copy of the "mbl" file closest to what you want, and open it in NotePad - tweak the values, save and choose your new look in the preset drop down back in Vegas.

But they render soooo sloooowly - I bet they've slowed it down on purpose to something like 1 frame per second... I mean what can it be doing with all those processor cycles?! It's not deinterlacing or anything is it?

I don't know Magic Bullet, but I would bet it IS deinterlacing. "Progressive Scan" is a big part of what makes a film look.

FWIW, jetdv and filmy's Film Look plug-in (using V4 FX presets) takes forever to render, too, mainly, I think just because you have to render every single frame. Great results, though....

Magic Bullet has always been a render hog. I understand that latest version speeds things up, however keep in mind th emore things you do with it the longer it will take. Also what is in Vegas in just a look maker, not the full product. The documentation on th elooks is very minimul - for example th ebug I discovered is that this is not the HD version, just the SD, thusly you are limited to output that is under 1020x1020. (But what do you want for free?)

Speaking of free - The film look script is by Edward/jetdv and the looks are by me and yes they do take a while to render. But there is not any output size limit. However I think it will render faster than Magic Bullet in any case. I have been waiting for Vegas 5 to come out to make sure nothing changed with the preset chains - seems fine so far. So in a while I will put out more looks and hopefully the same bundle so the "RC3" can change to a 'real' version. LOL.

Dave,

When I looked at jet's "film look script" a while back, it just set up the plugins. You still had to do the settings. Are there "looks" to it now? Or did I misread it initially?

I've used jetdv and filmy's plug-in, and can attest that it works really, really well.

The looks are available as FX Package presets. I actually use the presets more than the full "Film Look" plug-in because I'm more interested in the gamma and color curves than I am in the pull down modes.

Installed the movie look, but where do I find it in vegas?

There are basic looks now - so one way is that if you use the script there is a drop down that lists the presets/prebuilt looks. If you only use the looks they are under the FIlm FX Chains. These are just starting points using the plug-ins that come with Vegas.

Kodak have Super 8 stock back in production with a decent range of emulsions to choose from. Super 8 cameras can be had pretty cheaply on eBay and there's still a few places with S8 gates for decent telecines, sooo, just for the heck of it why not try the real thing?

Super 8 shot at 24 or 25 fps can look pretty damn good even out of my far from good Elmos, with a half decent camera and a better telecine you should be able to get at least as good as DV.

Just a thought!
