movie studio 11 won't accept .avi files

I have vegas ms 11 on my old pc no problem. I recently got a better editing pc and installed it on that instead. no problem. It works fine except now it won't import files from my wildlife camera trap which the same program did on my old pc fine. The only difference between the two is my old one had vlc player on it so I put that on the new one and it still won't work.
media info says the files I am trying to use are :
AVC main@L4.0 (CABAC/1 ref frames
media info also suggests a site to download the codec x264 but that doesn't work either.
I have the latest update on movie studio. I tried downloading the x264 codec from cnet but but when I click open it just flashes up then closes.. no idea why. I have re-started the pc several times.
Its windows 8 (grrrr) by the way.
When I try to imoprt a file from the cam it says "video studio cannot import any of the files"
any ideas to save me pulling my haiur out?
thanks
alex

You need to download and install the x264vfw codec from Sourceforge.
There are 32- and 64- bit versions available for your OS.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/files/

alex

ps: not that it really matters for a wildlife cam but the sound to go with it doesn't load on?? but hey .just happy the video goes on

Post the file properties using Mediainfo from Sourceforge.
It is likely you will have to demux the audio and bring into the timeline separately.

Extract the audio file separately as PCM using AVIDemux.
That's the only practical way to do it.

I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11.0 on Windows 8 and it also does not accept .avi files, saying that this is an "unsupported file type". I downloaded both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of that codec and it still isn't working. :( What do?

Post your complete file properties using Mediainfo from Sourceforge. There are hundreds of codecs, ....

This fix did not work for me. I'm using 64-bit Windows 7 operating system. Can you help me open my .avi files please?
