Movie Studio 13 and DxTory, Codec Incompatibility?

SFBrother wrote on 3/28/2014, 6:14 PM
I just bought Movie Studio 13 hoping I would be able to edit videos I record from DxTory, a DirectX video game recorder. However, upon trying to edit my first video, I am hit in the face with Movie Studio crashing every time I add media to the timeline. Upon more research, I have found the problem to be an incompatibility between the codec that DxTory uses, and what Movie Studio supports. Now, I know for a fact that some people who use DxTory also use Movie Studio 12 as their editing software, and if it was supported in the last generation of Movie Studio, it SHOULD be supported in movie Studio 13, otherwise it's a step back.

So, as this is a codec problem, I went out and tried different codec's as well as different codec's DxTory comes with. All of them are horrible, the quality is horrible, and the frame rate is well below 10 FPS, meaning they are off my list. I have installed so far Xvid (Which doesn't record DirectX video, instead, it minimizes the game that I am playing)
Lagarith losless video codec (1, frame rate drops below 20, and Movie Studio 13 will crash upon moving to timeline.
DxTory Video Codec (the one that should work out of the box, however Movie Studio Crashes).

I have a fairly powerful system that can handle edits. I currently have a:
AMD 6 Core processor clocked at 3.5 GHz.
8 GB RAM.
Nvidia GTX 650 GPU

Is there anything that I can do to get Movie Studio to function the way it should? Your help is appreciated.

Those are some pretty non-standard video codecs, SFB!

Movie Studio can handle a wide range of formats and codecs, but it's primarily designed to work with camcorder video like DV, MPEG and AVCHD.

Once you get out into the area of game recorders and Lagarith codecs, there are no guarantees. Even if it did work on another computer or on an other version of the program.

Are you able to edit these videos with Windows MovieMaker Live? That would be a good test to see if the codec functions on your computer's current operating system?

Windows can edit them, however WMM decreases the quality a lot when adding media to the timeline.

I have tried numerous codec's including the MPEG-4 you say works with Movie Studio. Well... It still crashed. Is it possible to get a refund for this software? It doesn't work. I'm frustrated and just want it to work.

You'll have to ask whoever you purchased your software from for a refund. This is a user to user forum. We don't work for Sony here.

FWIW, the program does work near-flawlessly with camcorder video.

I bought it straight from Sony as a download. Currently I'm settling with Windows Movie Maker as it has no problem, no crashes when adding media though it's limited, it works.

I have already asked Sony for a refund, however, I have not heard from any one from the support team for 2 days.

Well, those two days were Saturday and Sunday, FWIW.

Sony has always been extremely prompt in working with my customer service requests.

You did contact Customer Service and not Tech Support, right?

Beyond that, we can't do anything for you here. As I say, this is a user to user forum.

I wish you the best with your project. MovieMaker Live is a highly underrated program, so it should do what you need.

If we can get it to work, I'll be happy to use this software. However, from other forums such as the DxTory forums, they have given me countless # of advise with all different codec's n' everything to try to get Movie Studio 13 to work. Now that it's the weekday, I hope that Sony can help me with this issue, however I don't think that Movie Studio 13 will work for my needs regardless. I'll see what Sony says.

What is some software that can convert an xtor file to something that Movie Studio 13 can understand? And will transcoding the file make both the audio from my mic and game one big file, or will it keep it as 2 separate files? I want 2 separate files.
