Movie Studio 17 Crashing on program start

Hi there. I am trying to run Vegas Movie Studio 17, but it keeps crashing when trying to start the program. It gets to "Creating file I/O Manager" and then gives me the error report screen. Below is a copy+paste of the error report:

Problem Description
   Application Name:    Movie Studio
Application Version: Version 17.0 (Build 137)
   Problem:             Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
   Fault Module:        C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio 17.0\MovieStudioHD170.exe
   Fault Address:       0x00007FFBB9DD09F0
   Fault Offset:        0x00007FFBB9DD09F0

Fault Process Details
   Process Path:        C:\Program Files\VEGAS\Movie Studio 17.0\MovieStudioHD170.exe
Process Version:     Version 17.0 (Build 137)
   Process Description: Movie Studio

I tried resetting the program by holding CTRL+SHIFT whilst starting the program from my desktop shortcut, but to no avail (yes I checked the box to clear the cache as well, still didn't work). I've been looking around for a solution to this, but none of the possible fixes I've tried have worked. The only option I have not tried that was suggested on a another forum was to re-install Windows, and I'm not interested in doing that quite yet.

My computer is a Dell Latitude E6530 with:

8GB of RAM

Dual-core 3rd-gen Intel corei7 3540M running at 3.00GHz, 64-bit processor.

Windows 10 fully updated as of the day of writing this post.

My GPU situation is a bit weird. It technically contains an Nvidia NVS 5200M with 1GB of VRAM as a dedicated GPU, however for displaying graphics on the laptop screen, the integrated graphics 'module' I will call it is an Intel HD Graphics 4000, so my computer, according to Dell, uses the Nvidia GPU as coprocessor when viewing on the laptop screen. However, When viewing on a seperate monitor through the VGA or HDMI port, it uses only the dedicated Nvidia GPU. I tried opening Movie Studio on a seperate monitor with my computer set to only display on that seperate monitor, but the same exact error occurred.

My video drivers and all other drivers are up to date.

As stated earlier, my windows version is up to date.

I do not have similar issues (or any for that matter) with any other video editors (Windows Video Editor, LightWorks, DaVinci Resolve), just with Movie Studio.

I don't know what other information to provide other than what is listed here, so please let me know if you need to know anything else. Any help on this would be greatly apppreciated! Thank you very much in advance for your consideration.

Sorry I can't help you because I HAVE THE SAME problem!! In fact, with this version I have had nothing but problems. I have been a Vegas fan for many years but now....................

Same here. I was really looking forward to using this and getting back into video making. I have never had any issues with VEGAS on my computer until now.

Developers are aware that a few users are having problems with the first update caused by some GPU configurations. They hope to have this resolved in the next update.

Meantime uninstall MS17 and install the initial build.

If you don't have the file unfortunately you cannot download it from your Magix account as it will give you the current update. But see below.

For VMS17 Platinum the initial build 143 can be obtained here http://dl04.magix.net/2020/VEGASMovieStudio17/VEGAS_Movie_Studio_17.0.0.143_Platinum_INT.exe

For VMS17 (basic) the initial build is 103 and can be obtained here http://dl04.magix.net/2020/VEGASMovieStudio17/VEGAS_Movie_Studio_17.0.0.103_INT.exe

It is recommended that after installing you do a factory reset and clear the cache. Uninstalling does not do this.

Thanks for the help! It now starts up just fine. Only issue I'm having is that now it crashes whenever importing mp4 files encoded in H.264. I don't currently have any other video formats on hand to test but for now only audio files can be imported.

@boxman139 Try going into Options/Preferences and the File I/O tab. Untick anything that's ticked. If that doesn't fix it there are other GPU options in other tabs you could play with.
