Movie Studio for authoring only?

If one weren't ready (or flush with $$) to spring for the Vegas 6 + DVD upgrade, could one get away with using the authoring component of Movie Studio to author a DVD from content rendered from Vegas 5? Would the fact that Studio lacks an AC3 encoder affect the authoring process or outcome? Can I author both widescreen and fullscreen titles on the same DVD or is it one or the other?

Sure, you can author with DVDAS using content rendered from V5.

The lack of an AC3 encoder simply means the audio will be PCM - so it will take up more space, but will be of higher quality.

Screen mode is a function of the project (in DVDAS anyway), so it's one mode or the other - no mixing.

Any experience using Canopus' Let's Create DVD? Would it be a better option than Studio? I'm basically looking to create high-quality static menus, and to perhaps be able to author widescreen and full screen titles on the same disk. Am I SOL with cheap products? Can I at least get the high quality static menus with a cheap product?

If you want to mix screen modes and don't want to spend a lot of money, I'd suggest looking at DVD Lab Pro www.mediachance.com

As for high quality static menus, you've not provided enough information for me to comment. Yes, the low end products like DVDAS will let you produce a static menu - what sort of features does that menu need that would define it as high quality?

I guess by high-quality I mean buttons (or other similar elements) and text that are sharp and crisp with no jaggies. Also, If stills were used within the menu, I'd expect those to look decent too.

yes - DVD Lab Pro will give you all the fuctions you want plus about a 100 more at a very in-expensive price ..

or look at tmpgenc dvd author - which right now is the number one selling (on line) dvd author app ..

DVD author is great. It does motion menu's and can even mix mpeg types (different interlace types, bitrates, res's, etc).

Very nice program. Worht every penny. Doesn't do a couple things I wold of liked but of well. :)
