Movie Studio Freezes

I am using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Update 6.0b to edit a 28:30 show that airs on a regional network. I am having problems with the program freezing mostly during preview. It happens after I have all program segments in place (all is fine so far). But when I go back and enter Text overlays with png backgrounds the freezing starts if I Play a segment to preview it. The program will come back to life after several minutes but then will freeze again when I make a change. If I check Task manager, Movie Studio is using 99% of the CPU time and the hard drive light is flashing continuously. It is strange that this only seems to happen when the text and backgrounds are added. I normally must add 20-25 different text/background segments in a show. Any advice would be appreciated.

What is your computer specs? Do they match the recommended specs for the program. VMS does work with dual cores and can use 500MB of RAM and a decent amount of paging. I would start by upgrading RAM to 2GB to limit paging. DIsable anti-virus scanning. Upgrading CPU, if you have older hardware.

While throwing hw at the problem may reduce the pain I still think there has to be a better solution. Have you contacted Sony support?

If you have the patience, the time, and the will, you may want to try removing the added media/effects a few at a time to see if you can figure out what causes things to go weird. Or, conversely, go back to a point in time when things worked well and add things until behavior goes weird (that would probably be easier). If you can identify the exact event that makes VMS lose its marbles then you are more likely to get a solution to the problem.

Are your PNGs simple, or are there lots of different pieces used to build each image? Can you flatten them to JPEG or some simpler format to see if that helps?
