Movie Studio PE 11 considers .avi files "unknown"

I just got a new computer a few weeks ago, and bought Movie Studio PE 11 to go with it since I'd been using 8 for so long.

But when I tried to import some .avi files to make a music video, it said that it couldn't open them. If I select one in the importer, all it tells me is that it's an unknown file type.

I tried installing the x264vfw_38_2274bm_36885 fix, but that didn't work.

Any suggestions?

AVIs can be made up of any of thousands of codecs.

What model of camcorder did this video come from and what resolution is it?

If you open the file in G Spot or Media Info, what resolution, frame rate and, above all, codec is listed?

Sorry for the delay; I went to bed.

These .avi files are DVD rips -- from DVDs I own myself, mind. I make fanvideos for a hobby.

MediaInfo says:

Overall bit rate : 1 032 Kbps
Writing application : VirtualDubMod 1.5.4.1 (build 2178/release)
Writing library : VirtualDubMod build 2178/release

Format : MPEG-4 Visual
Codec ID : XVID
Codec ID/Hint : XviD
Duration : 23mn 42s
Bit rate : 906 Kbps
Width : 624 pixels
Height : 464 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 23.976 fps

Most of the files I'm trying to use right now are similar.

You'll need to download and install a divx/xvid VFW version.
Do so only from the main website, not as part of a third-party codec "pack." The "VFW" thing is important.

That did it! Thank you so much, Steve Grisetti and musicvid10!
