Movie Studio Plat 12 64bit shuts down computer

I have just switched to Studio 12 64 bit and am editing AVCHD 60i footage. Have had no real problems with Studio 11 32 bit with this footage for many projects on my present setup. Have been using Studio 12 64bit for a week.

After I edit for about an hour, simply importing clips, then trimming and re-arranging them on the timeline, there is a blip of sound and my computer shuts down (no blue screen, messages, or anything except an instant shut down). I save every few edits, so I have not lost anything yet, but of course it is a real pain to have to recover windows and Studio, especially after the second or third time it happens.

So far it just seems to happen randomly. One time it happened just after I saved, one time when I trimmed a clip on the timeline, one time when I moved an event and one time when I applied an effect. The first few times the shutdown occurred I wasn't expecting anything and am not sure what I was doing when it happened.

Also, the computer is on an UPS with whole house and local surge protection and I haven't noticed the power flickering or anything out of the ordinary.

Has anyone had this problem of Studio 64 shutting down Windows? Is this a know problem that I've missed (didn't find anything with search or Knowledge Base)? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be looking for in terms of problems with system or editing actions?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since it is only a matter of time until this corrupts my project or system. As I said, I am saving and backing up, but stuff happens!

Thanks

Just a guess - maybe your CPU is getting too hot. Depending on several factors an overheated CPU can stop your system cold (no pun intended.) A nice little utility to monitor CPU temp is Core Temp:

Hi Birk,

Thanks for the reply. I've run some tests, and the top CPU temp while editing in Movie Studio 64 bit is 45-47C, and my cooler doesn't kick up to a higher notch. It is interesting how much more CPU intensive Movie Studio 12 64bit seems to be than version 11 32 bit, or Avid Studio (32bit) since repeating the same general editing steps for 30 minutes in either of those programs only moves the temp up to 40-42C.

I've been closing Movie Studio every hour or so, and have not had any more shut-downs, but I've also been much more methodical in editing so as not to get ahead of the program, in case that was causing the problem.

Again, thanks for your help.
