When I render video over 10 min long with Sony Movie Studio platinum 13 or CyberLink Power Director 11 at the 8 min mark the computer abruptly shut off. No sounds the screen just goes black and the computer shuts off.. I'm using a Dell Intel Core i5 460M (2.53Ghz-SC 2.8 Ghz/3M). Video card is 1G Ati Moble Radeon HD 5470 Network card is Integrated 10/100. I have all the latest drivers etc for my computer. I'm a frugler who can not afford the more expensive editing systems..or a new computer. Thanks in advance for your input/opinions.

AS you're aware, you are using a mid- to low-end CPU for this process. (You can find benchmarks at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html Your processor rates about 2500. I usually recommend at least 5500-6000 for video editing.)

But that said, you may also be running out of free space on your hard drive. Or you may have space but fragmentation is keeping your system from grabbing the large chunks of space it needs to render larger files. Assuming you've got 50+ gigs of free space, Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragment may help you.

But a lot depends on things like what model of camcorder your video is coming from and what resolution and format it is -- and how well your project settings are matched to your video specs. The closer your project settings are to your video specs, the more efficiently your computer will perform.

Check your cooling (lots of free apps to check temp). Clean the inside of your computer and reset your cooling fan on the CPU.
