Movie Studio won't open MP4 file

JBallPub wrote on 8/12/2011, 10:58 AM
I have a MP4 file shot with a simple FLIP video camera, about 3 gig in size. When I try to drop the file into Movie Studio I get the following message:

None of the files dropped on Vegas Movie Studio HD could be opened

I have opened and edited other MP4 files shot with this camera. Unless there is a file size limitation, I don't know why I can't bring this file into Movie Studio.

Anyone know why I can't open this file in Movie Studio?

Your version of Vegas Movie Studio?
Your version of Quicktime?

I have heard of MP4 files not opening on older (and possibly current?) versions of Vegas when the file is over 2 GB.

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio v 9.0c
Quick Time Player v 7.6.9

If it's true that it won't open files over 2 GB, then what options are there?

Is there a way to chunk or split this 3 GB file into 2 separate movie files?

Can't help at all in response to the difficulties that you are experiencing other than to say that I recently imported a 3.2GB mp4 files into VMSP11 without any problems at all so that appears to place doubts upon the so-called 2GB limit certainly as far as v11 goes.

Quicktime 7.6.2 or earlier is compatible wih VMS 9.
However, the usual symptom of opening a Flip video file in Vegas with the wrong QT installed is missing audio.

I suspect that you may have multiple issues preventing your video from opening. You are using NTFS drives, right?

As musicvid said, as long as you're using the NTFS filesystem, you might want to also install in parallel Vegas Platinum 10 TRIAL. That version doesn't use Quicktime and it might not have the limitations you're seeing with Vegas 9.

Thank you for all your help and suggestions.
As those who commented have said, It looks like file size was the issue.
I was able to get it to work by downloading free software, Format Factory v 2.70, and splitting my large 3G file into smaller chunks that Movie Studio can now work with.
I didn't try installing Vegas Platinum 10 TRIAL, but that would have been my next move if Format Factory didn't work.
