Moving audio and video to tracks

Former user wrote on 1/10/2013, 8:45 PM
Okay, I have been using Vegas for years (Since sonic foundry days) and this has always drove me nuts so there must be a way around it.

I like to keep my audio/video tracks grouped together visually so Track 1 Video has its audio track right underneath it and Track 2 has its audio right underneath, etc.

When I split a scene on Track 2 and move it to track 1, I always have to move the audio separately, unless I shift or ctrl click on them and move them that way. Is there a modifier key or something I can do so when I move the video, the audio will shift up to the audio track as well? I know Vegas isn't based on audio track order and it doesn't know which tracks are tied to video tracks, but was just wondering.

not sure if this helps or is even the same but....

I notice when dragging grouped A/V it leaves the audio where it was UNLESS I move things down lower and then back up. It's like it just trys to stay there unless you whip it around more SHOWING who is boss.
I kinda know what I think you mean, for me it is like the audio is lagged a track space or two until I move it around more and it falls into place.

Hi Dave.

I'm not too sure I understand your issue. Upon reading your post, I fired up Vegas Pro (11) and put 2 tracks, with their respective audio immediately underneath both (meaning I had track 1 video with track 1 audio and then track 2 video with track 2 audio). All as expected so far.
I then split track 2 video and audio (using "S" key), then simply dragged video from track 2 video and it slotted into track 1 video, moving it's audio clip with this segment into track 1 audio.
This is how Vegas always behaves (with my settings), I never have to drag the audio separately upon moving a split segment from one video track, the audio file simply tags along into it's new appropriate audio track. If I don't want to move the audio, I simply ungroup the video and audio clips prior to dragging, which then allows me to move either the video or audio independently.

I know you have a great deal of experience and expertise with Vegas, so I'm a bit lost as to what you are seeing happen, because to me, it always works as expected and the video and audio segments always move to the new tracks (in sync) on the timeline together (unless I choose to move them independently). Sorry I can't help, as I can't understand your request.

Duncan,

You understand my question, but you are thinking differently, I believe.

If I move the video DOWN visually, the audio tracks move with it to the next lower audio track. But if I move the Video UP, the audio track will remain where it is.

Hi Dave,

Since replying, I've set up a project with 3 video and 3 related audio tracks, I can happily split and move video (and related audio) together by dragging video file UP to a higher track on timeline, and the audio tags along with the video and inserts itself into the appropriate (higher up) track, so I'm sorry, but I don't see the issue. I hope someone else can assist.

Interesting, mine has never worked that way. I wonder what we have set differently. I am using V11, but this has bugged me since the beginning.

Does anybody else see mine or Duncan's behaviour?

Hi Dave

Hopefully these 2 images of a project I just set up to emulate your issue in my skydrive will show you what I'm seeing:

3 track project at beginning, then same project having split track 3 video and dragged up to track 1 (taking audio with it).

I'm not greatly experienced with Skydrive, but hopefully you can see these 2 image files, pls let me know.

Hope this helps.

I can repo both behaviors.

If you Select an event and split it, the A/V moves as one.
If the event is not selected when you split it the A/V does not move as one.

Bob,

I am confused, how do you split an event without selecting it?

I cannot get them to stick together, can you explain the steps you do that made them stick?

I can get them to stick if I select the audio and video event before I move it, but if I split, click on the video and drag it up, audio stays on the original track.

A little more testing, Split the scene, and select the scene before the split, not the after and drag the video, the audio does not go. If I split and drag the video for the after split segmen, the audio goes.

"I am confused, how do you split an event without selecting it?"

Position the cursor over it and hit S. That'll split everything at that position on the T/L.
In my test there was only one event at that position on the T/L.

Bob,

Okay. I am talking about splitting a specific event. Not all tracks.
