Vegas has been able to do this for a long time.
Try the Animating Still Images tutorial on BillyBoy's site.

Alternately, you can use the Bezier Mask tool and animate that over time. But that will not do what *I'VE* wanted to figure out, and that is to have an arrow head on the line that follows the path, while leaving a trail behind it. But if you're just looking to reveal a path, then animate the bezier mask and you're done. Quick and easy. Always a good thing.

A Bezier mask used to either draw or reveal an already existing line is great for this. This is one place that Viscosity really shines, too, if you want to try that.

will get you to the Viscosity download page. You should be able to do this in the demo. Sony doesn't sell Viscosity any more, which is sort of a drag, cuz it was a very cool app for what it was supposed to do.
Export them as a series of PNG frames for easiest results.

The other thing i like about Viscosity is it's ability to save short video clips as animated .gif files. I'm not sure how many more times i'll be able to get SONY to reactivate my Viscosity license after reinstalling the OS. Anybody got any good recommendations for software with this function?

Pure Motion EditStudio has a Route Tracer as a built in effect. Very nice feature.
