I would consider avoiding 3.5" floppies, though that's just my opinion... :)

I believe that any files that are in the same directory as the project that references them will be found "smartly" by Vegas when you open the project. For files that are in other directories, you may have to specify the location for the first one (though Vegas might find them by using relative locations). Once you specify the location of the first file, I believe Vegas will be "smart" enough to find any subsequent files also in that location.
