moving video across the screen evenly

Hi
I want to make what I call the "moving filmstrip" look, which is full frames of video that move evenly across the screen like you're looking at a filmstrip. I did this in Avid by having :05 clips and starting the next clip on a new layer at 2:15. I then put in 3 keyframes, one on each end and one in the centre. The center one had the video centered on screen and the ends the video was off screen to the right and left. I also had to adjust the scaling in Avid to x=100 and y=100. However, I do not find this equivalent in Vegas. I have set up the key frames in the crop/pan mode, and I get it to move across the screen, but the gap in between each clip is very different, while it should be even, like a narrow black stirp. In Avid, you adjust this by setting the scaling.
Can anyone help?
thanks

ps. this also pertains to still photos in the timeline: they do not have to necessarily be moving inside the clip.

Both will show you several veg's that can be deconstructed to show you how to do this.

You'll do it much the same in Vegas, but you'll be using track motion, and set up keyframes that have 0 value smoothness.

Did you have to have the center key frame set to center? - that sounds like an extra step nightmare. There was a very similar setup in VT2 editing. That's one of the many things that I didn't like about VT2 - but it wasn't necessary, it could just be disabled.

Just Curiousity here, thanks for the info in advance.

Hi Spot,

Thanks for the tips. I don' t know what I'm missing, but I can't get anything to download off the VASST site. :(

Hi Dave,

That's a good idea! However, I tried eliminating the middle keyframe and it's the same thing. It looks like it moves at a variable speed. I dealt with the same thing in Avid until I figured out I had to have the scaling the same for the spaces between the moving boxes to match. Still searching in Vegas...
thanks for trying!

If you're not registered, you can't download.

The key is to change the "Smoothness" setting on each keyframe to ZERO. Then your linear keyframes will be linear.

I'll second Jet's recommendation. I've also been a victim of the Smoothness default setting (of 100 (on scale of 0 to 100 for Track Motion) and 1 (on scale of 0 to 1 for Pan/Crop)). Hard to figure out what's causing it, but now that you know, do a Forum search on "smoothness" and you'll see you're far from the first.

There doesn't appear to be any way to change the default setting, which is a shame, since it affects so many folks. Jet mentioned probably being able to write/modify a script to take care of it (in the thread below).

Also, as someone else mentioned in a previous thread, if you remember to set the smoothness to 0 for the first keyframe of the event, all new keyframes in that event will inherit that property. Doesn't help if you've already made 200 keyframes before you remember ...

Wish Sony could allow for this to be set in the Preferences.

Hi JetDV,

That's it! THANKS!
I second Brian's motion to be able to change that in the preferences, too!

Now that we have that figured out...

is there any way to duplicate this effect to each clip? Say I have 20 clips I want to move across the screen with 10 per track. I set up the first clip (oops, event...) so it moves across nicely. Can I place the same settings on each clip without having to change the settings in each individual event?

I really appreciate all the help I get here! Thank you, everyone!

If you did it via Pan/Crop and they're all the same length, sure. Just copy the first event and choose "Paste event Attributes" on the rest of them. You still may need to use two or more tracks if you want more than one on the screen at a time.
