MP2 or Mpeg Layer 2 audio only

We use Fastchannel to deliver radio spots to stations. They have been bought by DG Systems, and are moving to a new web portal, and are 'suggesting" or "requiring" the upload of MP2 files. This is audio only....no video involved. Is there a separate MP2 'render as" in Vegas? Any thoughts? (Of course the answer would also apply to SoundForge).

Thx.

You can use the MPEG2 encoder in Vegas to render an audio only file.

To do this select the Render as... then MainConceptMPEG-2 and choose a generic templatelike NTSC DVD. Now click on the custom button and in the video tab uncheck the video stream. In the audio tab set the audio paramters to suit the bit and sampling rates required.

Once you have set up the template to do what you want give the template a name and save it so that you can call it up easily next time. That's done in the top box Template: saving by clicking on the disk icon.

Now click OK and return to your Render dialogue box and name and Save your MPEG-2 audio file.

i gave this a try, and did a test. i used a similar bitrate (256kbps) for an mpg layer 2 (audio only) and an mp3, and compared the file sizes. the mp3 actually was a little bit larger (1.8 MB vs 1.6 MB for the mpg). They both sounded like what i would expect. But, DGFastchannel refused the .mpg file (supposedly because of the extension) and would not allow the upload. Hrph.

What extension do they want on the file?

You can actaully change the extension by simply renaming the file. As long as the new extension is coherent with the file type the file should still play and be useable.

For instance MPEG2 video/audio files on DVDs are normally .VOB files. If you copy an unprotected .VOB file off a DVD, say one you have made with DVDA, and then rename it to 'filename.MPG' the file type is immediately recognised as an MPEG.

So you could change the extension on your MPEG2 audio files to .MP2, if that's what DGFastchannel require, and the file should play.
