mp3 audio render w vid in Vegas

I have generally used uncompressed aud with most of my vid work in Vegas. Now I want to use mp3 and all I find is "MPEG Layer-3" which offers a max audio quality of 56kBit/sec, 24,000Hz.
I have many more options with Sound Forge with MP3.
What am I missing here

In general mp3's all screwed up, in part because MS dropped the pro codec they used to bundle with wmplayer. If you Google you can find out how to get it back.

For avi with mp3, last time I did it (which was a while ago) I could only get good compatibility in players by rendering the video in Vegas, then taking the rendered wav file, encoding to mp3 in S/Forge or Batch, then muxing in V/Dub.
