mp4 and m2ts

Using v12 SMS( and v10 prior). I Render to Sony's m2ts format and that does a good job. I can transport that on a Memory Stick and play it on friend's PC or it will play via USB on a Philips BlueRay player which I take as back-up to clubs, etc. the o/p being HDMI which most screens recognise.

I'm told that I should be rendering in mp4 . . . as this is "more universal" and a better prospect....

However, the Render Options are a nightmare - "My Favourites" are the m2ts and a .wav I have used for Audio tracks ( using Movie Studio as an Audio Editor, when SFS just won't do.).
Today, I tried XDCAM FX ( MP4) and my PC player (Windows Media Player Home Cinema) doesn't like it - Apple's QT complains there are things missing - but WMPHC will play after a struggle - the audio is patchy and the video+Audio is too fast. There is a "Slow-down" option but it's not right and the Audio is dreadful.

All my material is 50i and PAL and that's what I need for playback...although I'm told it's probably 25p. To make a DVD I use DVDAS v5. and that renders it again with some loss of quality, as you'd expect.
I'm not using BlueRay discs, as I don't have a suitable Burner.

The SMS Render process goes on an internal HDD.....the same Movie if rendered to m2ts will play OK on my PC and elsewhere, via USB-Memory Stick.
I suspect this easy is why I've never wished to change.

I was somewhat confused by “Help-mp4” suggesting I could view my movie in my hand and giving advice for PSP ( Playstation ) equipment.
I wonder why this Render Option is in caps: MP4, rather than lower case: mp4....ideas? Is this another mp4 perhaps?
Why is this mp4 playing too fast? ( I guess x2 ).
However, on the BD player ( Copied to USB-stick), the video looks correct speed, but it refuses any Audio, saying AUDIO NOT SUPPORTED.

Any suggestions as to a better Option for the mp4 Render process? I can't find anything else.
Is mp4 so Universal, I wonder?

( It won't even start to Render in mp4. )

Thankyou for the info - sadly while I can now change the m2ts to mp4 - when I Render it says" there is an Error:- 0x80010105 (message missing)"-
However, I took the precaution of changing the Title name, so any previous files were not overwritten as this has resulted in error msg in the past - ie even before the Render starts. Maybe I've not changed something and it doesn't like it - but can't say.... Windows, why not?

SMS:
It would be SO much easier if I could option-click on the mp4 on that first render-as page, without having to dig so much deeper - but you've pointed the way.

Thanks.

M2ts is a transport stream.
Mp4 is a program (delivery) stream.
Different purpose, different format, same video codec.
Hope that clears it up.

Thanks guys, will try to digest what you've written . . .
The evening.....I had yet another go and as I write it gone to 15% - not the near-instant error msg....Also it is telling me it's mp4 so it may be fixed, despite the hoops I'm forced to jump thro'

Ooops! an Error message again ! ( yet it did manage to get to 15% . ).

it's:not- " 0x80010105 (message missing) " -rather it gives no number at all, saying it could not be determined.... Ooo-er

I can play the part-rendered file Text is sharp and good colours, speed seems OK, although it's quite short - but there is no Audio - not a peep!
Will look at the Audio-settings as well. ( but unsure how I got the Video correct.).
