"I upgraded to the latest version of QT but that didn't solve the problem."

That is the problem. Qucktime 7.6.4 and up are broken.

Roll back to QT 7.6 and iTunes 8 and all will be well again.

"Qucktime 7.6.4 and up are broken."

Quicktime 7.6.4 (1327.73) is installed on the machine I'm writing from. The overwhelming majority of the mp4 clips I've put on the Vegas (Pro 8.0c) timeline have audio and play just fine.

I've run into an occasional file where the symptoms duplicate the situation described by the O.P., and my recollection is that those mp4 files originated in either a cellphone or a still camera with video capabilities. Perhaps those files are created with non-standard specs or a codec that Vegas can't handle.

I think it's important to give more complete information, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, as users can have different experiences. As noted, Vegas recognizes and correctly plays back mp4 clips with AAC audio in almost every instance I've tried.

The link provided mentions substantially what musicvid has stated, but it also mentions that a different version of qt7plug.dll, available for download from Sony, may also rectify the situation in Vegas and other Sony apps. I think that users should be armed with options, rather than being told to blindly roll back to a version of Quicktime that is incompatible with iTunes and is rated as insecure by Secunia PSI.

Interestingly, perhaps, I've noted that my system has different versions of qt7plug.dll for Vegas Pro 8 and DVD Architect 5.

Just offering the suggestions that work reliably for most people; neither the .dll nor Quicktime's "fixed" version have worked for very many it seems.

OTOH, the rollback works for most people. The other options are still there for anyone to try. I'm not limiting anyone's access to possible solutions; in fact, I've provided links to the knowledgebase article in dozens of my posts.

I'm glad 7.6.4 is working for you. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be a widely shared experience with Vegas Pro 8.0c and VMS users.

VP8.0 did not support AAC LC audio. It did support AAC LR audio. 9.0C supports both.

VP8.0 did not support AAC LC audio.

Yes, I recently discovered that annoying little fact.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, I'll check all these options out. What I think is funny is that the videos I'm trying to work with were created by a Sony DSC-H20 still camera, which is a recent model. You would think that the two products from the same vendor would behave. :)

It's not a conflict between Sony's products. Vegas depends on the Quicktime library for certain decoding functions, and Apple broke it for everyone. Just one of those things.
