mpeg 1 file import question

I created an MPEG1 file from analog to digital encoding using another program, and when I insert the file into the timeline of my project, it letterboxes (squishes) the top and bottom of the picture. I rendered project to an .avi file to see if things would get better but it is still that way. Did I miss a setting? I need to have it full screen like the rest of the music video.

You can manually adjust this with the Pan/Crop tool. Turn off Maintain aspect ratio (this step alone may accomplish it) and Lock aspect ratio (it's the button that looks like a small box in the upper left corner of the window). If necessary, manually adjust the cropping region until the preview window shows the video full screen or properly proportioned.
