MPEG-1 v MPEG-2

As I wanted to create SVCDs from my DV footage, I purchased the MPEG-2 add-in. However, every time I encode to PAL MPEG2, I get a pixellated frame about every 12 or so, which give a very noticeable flicker every half second. This flicker fades slightly over the next 20 seconds or so, but re-appears if I insert more titles in mid-project, only to fade again. In desparation, I tried the PAL MPEG-1 encoder. Not only was the quality much the same, the flicker is gone!
Has anyone any suggestions as to why this is, and how I can eliminate it?

On your pc or your dvd player and what dvd creation software are you using?

On both PC and TV/DVD player. I am not creating DVDs. I am making SVCDs(or trying to!) using VF and the VF MPEG-2 encoder.

Andy, I've had a similar sounding problem. VCD played ok on my DVD player, SVCD was terrible. But the same SVCD played fine on the pc - once I'd found a free MPEG2 player (Elecard). A couple of weeks later I came home to find my DVD had cooked itself! I bought a cheap Chinese player and everything's fine! So, have you tried playing your SVCDs on your PC? It may be that you have a compatibility issue with your DVD player.

BTW, I'm not suggesting that incompatibility with SVCD means you need to check your insurance policy - it was just one of those things!
