mpeg-1 vs mpeg-2

Can mpeg-1 be used to burn to a DVD? I am currently using mpeg-2 and it works fine but if I were to use mpeg-1 (smaller resulting file) does the quality go down a bunch from mpeg-2? I use avi when the movie is small enough to fit on a DVD and have had to use mpeg-2 on long movies but had to trim them quite a bit to fit on a regular DVD (4.7 gig) and i see that an mpeg-1 is about half the size of a mpeg-2 file but does it really loose quality on the DVD viewing on a large television?

I am using Sony Screenblast 2.0+DVD and I see that they now have a new product called Movie Studio out for a $29 upgrade. Is it a lot different, better, and worth it?

Thanks for your help.

Sorry, DVD only works with MPEG2. You can use an mpg1 file, but any authoring program will reencode to Mpg2.

It's worth the $29 upgrade for the included DVD Architect Studio alone. An awesome product!

Well, if you really, really want to use mpeg1, you could always create a VCD, but the quality would be much lower than DVD. I think of VCD quality as being comparable to VHS tape.

Are you asking if you can put MPEG-1 files on a DVD? If so, the answer's yes, but I'm not sure if you'll be able to play it on anything other than a computer.
