I have a mpeg-2 file that was originally created in adobe premiere 2.3GB in size. If Import the Mpg media into and open it in Sony Vegas, add a 5 second static image, and ask it to "Make a movie" the output file size is 3.9GB. i've also tried playing with the render as settings, but same results Anyone have any ideas about what could possibly be accounting for the additional file size? this seems a little strange to me. Or does anyone know of a program that I can use to recompress the output file to make it smaller?

Program
Sony Vegas Platinum V9.0B

the output settings are as follows
NTSC-DV
29.97
720x480
48,100, 16 bit audio.

It's all about the bitrate. File size is proportional to duration x bitrate. Nothing else matters. Since you're adding very little to the duration the change is that Vegas is encoding the new file with a higher bitrate than the original. Unfortunately, the 'movie studio' version of Vegas won't let you adjust the bitrate, except for a few broad presets.

Womble is a program that lets you cut and splice MPEG files without re-encoding. Google it and give it a trial.
