Upgrade to 8. ;)

Make sure you have all the latest updates. And try the v8 trial see if it fixes your problem.

Okay, now I feel stupid. :)

I upgraded to Vegas 8 and it still won't open MPEG-4 files.

I have an MP4 file (from a Sony video cam) playing in Windows Media Player. It's just a few seconds long.

Please email me and send me a 3 second file from that camera (make sure it's not too big that file). I will try it for you. eloli-at-hotmail.com

I am able to playback the file you sent me just fine on both my Vegas Pro 8 and Platinum 8. I am not sure if this is because Vegas itself supports it, or because I have ffdshow-tryouts installed on my PC. I would recommend you install these two and retry:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow_rev1625_20071119_clsid.exe
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/MatroskaSplitter.exe
These DirectShow plugins will enable MPEG4 support system-wide (including playing h.264 and mp4 on Windows Media Player).

Thanks.

I can't believe I'm installing "last night's build" of anything on one of my production machines but it's done.

And it didn't seem to have any effect. I still get "The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized." in Vegas Platinum 8 with Windows XP Pro SP2.

I couldn't reach the second link you quoted from the Russian site.

"The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized."

That message sounds like an install gone bad or a corrupt dll. Have you tried to delete and reinstall ?

The .exe url works for me...
I understand that this can be a bit scary btw. Try also re-installing Vegas indeed. I could playback your "hello" file on my Vegas. :)

Okay.

I re-installed Vegas 8.0. No joy.

I installed the MatroskaSplitter thing. No joy.

Restarted Windows after each install.

ok, last try, download the XDiV package. That's the only additional library I have installed on my XP and I can view your video on Vegas.

At the suggestion of Eric at Sony support, I upgraded Quicktime and that did the trick. Thanks!
