Mpeg PCI card...

I got a Athlon XP 1800 (512 ram). 2x40gb IBM GXP120 (raid) for editing. And a Adaptec FireWire PCI card... My budget is almost nothing but I can always spare some... My problem is to get my projects out to tape (VHS, BETACAM, etc).

If I buy a mpeg PCI card (about 60-80$) can I then get good analog out to my VHS or borrowed BETACAM recorder? Do I lose alot of quality when rendering to mpeg2 then play it out via the mpeg card? Is this a bad solution?

Another question:
The colors of my last project looked quite different (when played on TV) then on my monitor. So do I get a "real" color view if I render a little clip and play it (with my Matrox G400 tv-out) on my TV? (Would like to see if I'm way out of whats looks on my monitor)

I would like a Canopus ADVC100 but can't afford it at the moment so Im looking for an alternetiv solution.....

You don't mention your camera. Since you have a firewire port, is it possible that you also have a DV camcorder already? If so, you should be able to use that as a D/A converter for printing to VHS/Beta.

I've got an MPEG decoder card and have used it for what you mention. It worked relatively well except for the aspect ratio. Everyone ended up sort & fat, with thin black strips across the top & bottom of the picture.
